RACE VIDEO: Watch Michael Phelps Rip a 50.45 100 Fly at U.S. Nationals

Michael Phelps of North Baltimore Aquatic Club rose to the challenge put forth by Chad Le Clos, after the South African’s 50.56 gold-medal performance in the 100m butterfly earlier today at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan. After his 200m butterfly in last night’s final session, Phelps posted yet another World-leading time, this time winning the U.S. National title in the 100m fly with 50.45. Phelps eclipsed Le Clos’ World Championships time by .11.

Phelps was relatively slow off the blocks, but he made up for it with an incredible wall at the 50 and perhaps the best second-half of his career.

r 0.81 / 24.10 / 26.35 = 50.45

I personally feel even in the years leading up to Beijing that Phelps wasn’t necessarily making 100% of his workouts. I doubt he was being the best he could be away from the pool and I’m sure he was doing a bit of partying here and there. If Phelps is truly 100% committed in and out of the pool including using his substantial funds to eat exactly what a professional nutritionists and cook give him. If he really is ready for that kind of commitment I’m convinced he will shock us all and do 100% best times. Of course that’s quite a big IF and who says I’m right to begin with.

His back-half is unparalleled. His front-half that is always mediocre. There are very few swims where a swimmer has gone sub-51 without getting out under 24 on the first lap.

Here is every time MP has swam 50-point (or under) with splits! US Nationals was his 2nd fastest back-half – 0.01 slower than a race he swam with a shiny suit.

2015 Nats – 50.45 – 24.10 / 26.35

I actually want to see Phelps run a 100 or a mile, see how he fares to the rest of the nation.

Too easy.. unless he goes to gymnastic and single-handlely beats the japanese, puts US male team as a contender on soccer and handball, defeats djokovic on tennis while playing only using backhands and defeats the chinese on table tennis with perfects 11-0 he will never be a true athlete! Enough Said!
