The Duxbury girls won the 2020 Massachusetts 2A Girls State Championships as the only team to exceed 200 points. Cohassett won a tight battle for the runner-up spot, 18 points ahead of 2019 champion Wayland. In their victory, Duxbury won 2 events: the 200 IM and 200 medley relay.
In the 200 medley relay, Julia Ali led off with a 27.31 back split. Ava DeAngelis (breast- 29.37) and Danielle Koelbel (fly-27.70) took on the middle legs. Julia Leedom anchored with a 24.97 free split as they won the race in 1:49.34. DeAngelis went on to win the 200 IM individually. Her 2:06.75 was a best by over a second.
Dover-Sherborn sophomore Ava Yablonski narrowly missed the Meet Record in the 50 free. She won the event in a lifetime best 23.54, just 5 hundredths shy of the Meet Record originally set in 2006. Eliza Butts and Jessica Li share that record. Yablonski was the 2019 champion in the 100 fly, but had chosen the 50 free this season instead. She did repeat as champion in the 100 back with a lifetime best 54.44. She’s now 4 tenths shy of the Meet Record.
Cohasset’s Emily Appleton also picked up a pair of individual wins. She broke 1:52 for the first time in the 200 free as she won the title in 1:51.65. Her 2nd win came in the 500 free, where she clocked a 4:56.99. Appleton also contributed a 53.62 lead split as the Cohasset girls won the 400 free relay in 3:26.23. That was her first swim under 54.
