U.S. National Team Tracker: Brown, Held Now #3 Americans This Year in 50 Free

2019 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The race is still on for spots on the 2019-2020 U.S. National Team, and swimmers at the U.S. Nationals are trying to break the American top 6 in their respective events to qualify for the squad. To make the team, swimmers have to be in the top 6 of their individual events with times determined by the FINA world rankings from January 1st, 2019 to August 25th, 2019. Tonight, swimmers at Nationals competed in the men’s and women’s 200 IM and 50 free. We also saw the men’s 800 free and women’s 1500 free.

SELECTION CRITERA:

Here’s a look at how the 2019-2020 U.S. National Team will be selected. You can see the full criteria here.

  • Top 6 athletes in each individual Olympic event
    • as determined by FINA.org’s World Rankings from January 1, 2019 through August 25, 2019
    • Rankings will be pulled from the FINA site on September 3 (giving swimmers a chance to make sure their time is included in the database)
  • Prelims, semifinals and finals (A, B, C and D) from all USA Swimming or FINA sanctioned meets are eligible
  • Relay leadoffs, time trials, swim-offs and intermediate splits are not eligible

DAY 5 UPDATES:

Ryan Lochte is in a position to potentially qualify for his first U.S. National Team since 2016. Lochte is now ranked #4 in that event after winning his first national title since 2014. Shaine Casas, who took 2nd tonight, is now the American #5 this year. Ryan Held picked up another sprint win to move to #3 among Americans. Bowe Becker and Robert Howard are now tied for 5th in that event, with Becker swimming his first best time in the 50 free since 2016. Bobby Finke moved to the top of the 800 free rankings ahead of Zane Grothe. Michael Brinegar, Ross Dant, and Eric Knowles all made their way into the top 6 behind them.

The women’s distance race tonight was the 1500 and there were a few movements in the rankings there as well. Ally McHugh is now #3, while Kensey McMahon and Sierra Schmidt also made their way into the top 6. Madisyn Cox remains #2 in the 200 IM, while Vanessa Pearl moved to #6. Happy to see the infusion of some new talent in the women’s 50/100 free. Hopefully Weitzeil, Brown and Walsh can keep improving over the winter. The relays need more speed and depth to help Manuel/Commerford next summer.

Cate Campbell is 27 years old. Bronte Campbell is 25 years old. One of these years, at least one of the Campbell sisters will start slowing down. Right?

It’s already started mentally. 1-2 more solid relay legs and its American gold.

It’s a safe formula for a silver medal.

Really hope Adrian feels good this week, he’ll need to break 22 to make the national team. Let’s say he does, what is the tiebreaker between Becker and Howard? Next best event?

Foster will need to overtake either Lochte or Kalisz to get the second spot.
