Trojans Pick up Verbal Commitment from IMer Ryan Abdollahi for 2020-21

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ryan Abdollahi of Dana Point, California has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Southern California for the 2020-21 season and beyond. A senior at Dana Hills High School, he is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and Winter Juniors-or-better qualifier in the 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 free, 500 free, and 200 breast.

Abdollahi has several connections to Troy. His father did his Orthopedic residency at USC and his coach at Irvine Novaquatics, Adam Crossen, swam for the Trojans during his collegiate career.

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Southern California. I chose USC because it has the best opportunities both in the pool and in the classroom, and overall is the best fit for me. I would like to thank my coaches, family, and friends who supported me along the way. Can’t wait to be apart [sic] of the Trojan Family! Fight on!”

Abdollahi placed 3rd in the 200 IM (1:49.12) and 6th in the 100 breast (56.20) at the 2019 CIF Southern Section Division I Championships last season. He also anchored the 200 free relay (21.52). At 2018 Winter Juniors West, he competed in the 200 free, 200 breast, and 200/400 IM and finaled in the 400 IM. He picked up a slew of new times (500 free, 200 back, 200 breast, and 400 IM) at the CA/NV Spring Sectionals in Carlsbad. This summer, he swam lifetime bests in the 200 free (1:54.61) and 200 IM (2:07.56) at 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals.

Top SCY times:

  • 400 IM – 3:54.93
  • 200 IM – 1:49.12
  • 200 breast – 2:03.57
  • 100 breast – 56.20
  • 500 free – 4:29.91
  • 200 free – 1:41.40

Abdollahi is already a potential scorer for the Trojans at Pac-12s. His best 200/400 IM and 100 breast times would have qualified for the C finals at the 2019 conference meet. USC didn’t have a very deep IM group last season. Mark Jurek, now a senior, was the lone scorer at conference in the 400 IM. And while then-seniors Walker Bell and Billy Monjay, current sophomore Ariel Spektor, current senior Matt McDermott, and Jurek finaled in the 200 IM, no one scored higher than 14th. Joining Abdollahi in the Trojans’ class of 2024 will be Ben Dillard, Danny Syrkin, Holden Raffin, Hugh Svendsen, and Scott Sobolewski.
