Trials Qualifier Aaron Shackell Verbally Commits to Cal Class of 2027

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Aaron Shackell from Carmel, Indiana has made a verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for the 2023-24 school year and beyond.

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of California Berkeley to continue my swimming and academic careers. I’d like to thank all the coaches who helped me get to this point as well as my parents for supporting me from the beginning. Go Bears 🐻!!!”

Shackell is a junior at Carmel High School. He swims year-round with Carmel Swim Club, having moved there a year ago from Rockwood Swim Club. At the Indiana High School Boys State Meet last season, he placed 6th in the 500 free (4:34.50) and 10th in the 200 free (1:40.34), both of which were PBs at the time. In December, he improved to 4:26.10/1:38.24 at Winter Juniors-East. He also picked up a new best time in the 200 fly (1:45.87). Shackell finaled in all three events, placing 6th in the 200 fly, 8th in the 500 free, and 14th in the 200 free.

He qualified for Olympic Trials Wave I in the 200 fly at a Carmel Swim Club Intrasquad meet in May, going 2:01.00. In Omaha, he came in 20th in that event in prelims. He also time-trialed the 100 fly. He wrapped up long course season at the Speedo Summer Championships-East, where he made finals in all four of his events. He placed 18th in the 200 free, 11th in the 400 free, 22nd in the 100 fly, and 11th in the 200 fly, and left the meet with PBs in the 200 free (1:53.63), 400 free (4:01.35), and 100 fly (55.43).

Shackell kicked off 2022 with a bevy of new times at the CSC Winter Invitational in January. Those include the 50/100/200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM. His best SCY times include:

  • 200 fly – 1:45.87
  • 100 fly – 47.82
  • 500 free – 4:26.10
  • 200 free – 1:37.54
  • 100 free – 44.69
  • 50 free – 20.82

He will join the Cal class of 2027 with the already-committed Keaton Jones (#5), Roman Jones (#9), Samuel Quarles, Nic Antoniou, and Rob Alexy. He will overlap with butterflyers Gabriel Jett and Dare Rose and mid-distance freestylers Jett, Tyler Kopp, Trent Frandson, and Rose.
