In the women’s 400 IM prelims, Steenbergen threw down a 4:44.28 to take out Wendy van der Zanden‘s previous mark of 4:44.73 from the 2016 European Championships. Steenbergen was more than four seconds slower on the backstroke leg, but she made up that ground on the back half of the race.

Splits Comparison, 400 IM Dutch Records

Marrit Steenbergen, 2023 Wendy van der Zanden, 2016
100 Fly 1:02.11 1:02.79
100 Back 1:16.81 1:12.25

400 IM 4:44.28 4:44.73

Steenbergen just missed the FINA A cut of 4:43.06 in that prelims swim, but she didn’t return to race it again in the final. In her absence, Lotte Hosper placed first in the 400 IM with a 4:52.89, followed by Djanilla Brink who swam a 4:55.59 for silver, and Megan Jonkman with a 5:03.92 for bronze.

In the men’s 200 breaststroke, Arno Kamminga bounced back from Thursday’s defeat in the 50 breast by notching a win in 2:10.91. That swim for Kamminga was well off his lifetime best and Dutch record of 2:06.85. It was also over the FINA A cut in this event of 2:10.32. Austria’s Christopher Rothbauer swam a 2:11.89 to claim silver and Ivo Kroes was third in a 2:12.23.

Sven Schwarz of Germany also cleared the FINA A cut in his event on day two of the meet. Schwarz won the 1500 freestyle with a 14:56.08, beating the standard of 15:04.64. This swim was just over Schwarz’s best time in the event of 14:55.82. He won the event by more than half a second as Levin Peschlow touched with a 15:33.69 for the silver medal and Moritz Bockes swam a 15:36.17 for bronze.

The only swimmers other than Schouten and Schwarz to swim faster than the FINA A cut came in the men’s and women’s 50 backstrokes. Kira Toussaint won the women’s 50 backstroke in a 28.03 to undercut the 28.22 cut. That time was around a second slower than her best time and European record of 27.10.

In the men’s 50 back, Czech swimmer Tomas Franta delivered a 24.93 as the fastest man, getting under the FINA A of 25.16. Germany’s Cornelius Jahn placed second with a 24.99 to also clear the FINA A standard and Czech swimmer Jan Cejka hit a 25.43 for bronze. The fastest man from the Netherlands in the 50 back was Daan Sonneveld who swam a 25.97 for 6th.

Other day two event winners included Thomas Jansen (4:17.34) in the men’s 400 IM, Maaike de Waard (58.48) in the women’s 100 butterfly, Daniel Gracik (52.58) in the men’s 100 butterfly, and Jeannette Spiworks (16:20.99) in the women’s 1500 freestyle.

Since it is not mentioned here: Tes Schouten’s time brings her back to world rank 1 so far this year. She was not tapered, and is coming back from a two months’ illness.
