Spitz, Nguyen Among Those Earning CIF Div 1 Top Seeds At Sunset League

Newport Harbor High School’s Ayla Spitz picked up two wins at the Sunset League Championship last week, with both swims earning her the top seed at the upcoming CIF Division 1 Championships. Spitz won the 100 free (49.64) and 100 back (54.16). She’ll look to improve upon her performances of 2nd (100 fr) and 4th (100 bk) at last year’s CIF meet.

Also earning top seeds for the meet were Marina High School’s Jacquelyn Harris in the 100 fly (54.57), Fountain Valley’s Justin Nguyen in the 100 back (49.64) and Huntington Beach’s Ethan Wojciechowski in the 100 free (44.84). Harris also won the 50 free, and Nguyen also won the 200 free.

VARSITY MEET

Along with Spitz and Harris, Fountain Valley’s Shayla Erickson also doubled up on the girls side with wins in the 200 free (1:49.16) and 500 free (4:54.52). Fountain Valley also won the 200 free relay, as they went on to win the girls varsity title.

Newport Harbor won the boys meet despite only one win coming in the 400 free relay. Los Alamitos was just two points back for 2nd with only one win as well, coming from Brandon Toland in the 50 free (20.73).

Edison took 3rd with wins from Taylor Whitmore in the 200 IM (1:54.35), Jonathan Bramm in the 500 free (4:33.14), and the 200 medley relay. Nguyen was the only double winner on the men’s side.

JV MEET

In the Junior Varsity meet Edison took the win for the girls and Newport Harbor for the boys.

Edison had five wins on the girls side, led by Kalia Ennen who took wins in the 200 IM (2:22.24) and 100 fly (1:04.67). Also winning for them was Kristin Adams in the 100 free (57.76) and Jennifer Murphy in the 500 free (5:27.99), along with a win in the 400 free relay.

Newport Harbor took 2nd with three wins coming from Emma Kennedy in the 100 back (1:05.54), Quincy Morgan in the 200 free (2:01.42) and Lauren Carney in the 50 free (26.47).

The boys meet saw an absolute onslaught from Newport Harbor, as they won every single event en route to winning by nearly 300 points. Nicholas Bergsma was the lone double winner taking the 50 (22.09) and 100 free (48.83).
