Updating you on our earlier story, Penn State senior Shane Ryan will make his third and final championship final appearance in the 100 back after defeating fellow senior, Taylor Dale of the Georgia Bulldogs, in a swim-off this afternoon at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The two seniors tied for 8th in this morning’s preliminaries, both touching in 45.27. Dale had to swim on the 200 medley relay for the Bulldogs, helping them secure a spot in the consolation final of that event with a 15th place finish, so the swim-off took place after the first round of 3m diving preliminaries.
Ryan, probably a little fresher than Dale, burst off the wall and broke out ahead of Dale thanks to kicking deep underwater, and maintain a clear lead over Dale for most of the race. The Bulldog senior had a very strong final turn to almost pull even to the Nittany Lion, and Ryan looked a little long on the touch, but still managed to hit the wall first in a time of 45.21. Dale was just behind him in 45.42, and will get the middle lane into tonight’s consolation final.
