The Lassiter girls and Johns Creek boys put up dominant team victories at the 6A GHSA Swimming & Diving Championships back on February 3-5.
The tone was set immediately in this meet, as the Centennial boys broke the GHSA Record in the 200 medley relay. Aidan Saunders (24.45), Justin Bender (24.38), Sebastien Sergile (21.06), and Caeleb Paek (21.82) combined for a 1:31.71, clipping the previous record. It was the middle 100 with Saunders and Sergile where Centennial took over the race. Other notable splits include a 22.07 backstroke split from BUFD’s Benjamin Irwin.
Sebastien Sergile would go on from the relay victory to win the first individual event – the 200 free. In finals of the 200 free, the UVA commit clocked a 1:34.05, downing the GHSA Record. The swim was also a personal best for Sergile, chipping a little over a second off his previous best of 1:35.13. Dalton junior Roman Valdez had a fantastic race as well, posting a 1:35.65 for 2nd place.
Sergile also took the boys 100 fly, establishing a new personal best of 47.50, marking his 2nd time under 48 seconds in the event. His first sub-48 came in prelims, where he clocked a 47.80.
Impressively, ALTO freshman Noah Smith won the boys 50 free, roaring to a 20.73 to touch the wall first by 0.24 seconds. Smith was actually faster in prelims, where he clocked a 20.56.
After his speedy back split on the medley relay, Benjamin Irwin would go on to win the boys 100 back, swimming a 47.34. He touched first by 4 seconds, after establishing a 2-second lead on the opening 50 (22.63).
Similarly, Justin Bender went on from the 200 medley relay to win the boys 100 breast, throwing down a 54.23 for a new personal best. The Gardner-Webb commit used a 25.33 on the first 50 to get out the lead, and managed to maintain the lead through the back half of the race.
In the girls meet, CBDG junior Sophie Brison put up a huge win in the 100 back, clocking a 54.27. The swim was a personal best for Brison, who has committed to swim for Tennessee after high school.
Sequoyah senior Delaney Harrison was dominant in the girls 50 free, swimming a 23.38 to finish as the only girl in the field under 24 seconds. Harrison, an Arkansas commit, would go on to win the 100 free as well, posting a 50.67.
Centennial freshman Allison Kasik won the girls 100 breast, swimming a 1:04.82. It was a tight race with fellow freshman Maggie O’Shaughnessy (Lassiter) who finished 2nd, touching in 1:05.15.
Lassiter’s Elizabeth Tilt won the girls 200 IM in 1:59.74, touching just off her personal best of 1:59.23. Tilt went on to win the 100 fly in 53.78, hitting the wall first by 3.2 seconds.
