HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison swim & dive won both diving events and both relay events while also winning four individual swimming events for its first dual meet win of the season as it took down Marshall, 167.5-132.5, on Saturday at Savage Natatorium.
Junior Alexa Holloway won both diving events with NCAA Zone qualifying scores while also recording the third highest 3-meter score in program history.
Senior Jess Pryne and sophomore Alex Volk each won individual events in addition to senior Madison Cottrell’s two individual wins. The Dukes won the 200 Medley Relay by setting the pool record while also winning the 200 Free Relay.
Diving
- JMU began the meet by sweeping the 3-meter board with all three Dukes recording NCAA Zone qualifying scores. Holloway earned first with a score of 326.03 and was followed by Kate Vitolo’s 301.35 score and Maddie O’Mera’s score of 290.78.
- Holloway followed her 3-meter board performance by taking first on the 1-meter board with another NCAA Zone qualifying score of 300.98. Maddie Yager earned an NCAA Zone qualifying score as well, taking third place with a score of 283.13.
Swimming
- In the 1000 Free, the Dukes took the second and third place finishes as Abby Maguire and Katelyn Fitzgerald swam times of 10:34.36 and 10:35.02, respectively.
- Grace Bousum was the lone Duke to place in the 200 Free, swimming a time of 1:54.90 to claim second.
- Cottrell earned wins in the 100 Back (56.36) and 100 Fly (56.34). Cameron Gring finished in third in the 100 Back with Cottrell with a time of 57.92 while Ann Chappell Ellington claimed third in the 100 Fly with a time of 59.00.
- In the 200 Fly, Pryne finished second with a time of 2:06.46 with Angela Ritchie right behind her at 2:08.40.
- The Dukes took the top two spots in the 50 Free with a .13 second difference in the times. Volk won with a time of 24.25 as Jamie Cornwell finished with a time of 24.38.
- Riley Bridgman earned a pair of second place finishes in the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.33) and 200 Breaststroke (2:22.82).
- In addition to the 200 Fly finish, Pryne earned another top-three finish. She took third in the 100 Free with a time of 52.94.
- Taking second in the 200 Back with a time of 2:05.26 was Gring.
- Bousum earned another second-place finish, this time in the 500 Free with a 5:11.28 time. Maguire earned third in the race with a time of 5:11.82.
- JMU swept the 400 IM with Pryne winning behind a time of 4:29.88. Bridgman and Ritchie took the next two spots in order with times of 4:35.17 and 4:36.31.
Relays
- JMU finished first and third in both the 200 Medley and 200 Free Relays.
- The team of Gring, Bridgman, Cottrell and Volk won the 200 Medley Relay and set the pool record with a time of 1:42.95. Emily Drakopoulos led the third-place team, joined by Suzanne Earnshaw, Sydni Diehl and Cornwell, as they swam a time of 1:47.09.
- The 200 Free Relay was won by the team of Diehl, Cornwell, Cottrell and Volk with a time of 1:35.33
- Drakopoulos once again led the third-place team that included Maddie Lehman, Gring and Bousum as they swam a time of 1:37.51.

It was fun to have our first official Sun Belt meet against Marshall. They provided a great challenge and will surely test again at our conference championships in Orlando in February. Up Next
JMU is done with dual meets in the fall portion of the season. The divers will next head to Morgantown, W.Va. for the West Virginia Invitational on Nov. 16-18, hosted by West Virginia. The swimmers will head south to Charlotte for the Queens hosted Fall Frenzy, which takes place from Nov. 17-19.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team (0-1) set 22 season bests and saw Grace Kelsheimer qualify for the 1m Dive at the NCAA Diving Zones in the team’s inaugural Sun Belt Conference meet at JMU. MU had 19 top-three finishes, including eight first-place winners at the 16-event meet.
The Herd fell to the Dukes 167.5-132.5 on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
“I thought the first half of the meet got away from us,” Herd swimming and diving head coach Ian Walsh said after the meet. “That’s an adjustment we will make leading into Purdue. The second half was phenomenal and saw a lot of grit from our women. JMU is a tough venue to race at and we had 22 season bests across 18 of our student-athletes.”
Kelsheimer’s NCAA Diving Zone qualifying score of 291.90 set a new personal record breaking her mark of 273.15 set last season.
Eszter Laban completed a clean sweep winning all three of her events at the dual taking the 1000 Freestyle (10:30.40), 200 Butterfly (2:04.94) and the 500 Freestyle (5:08.09).
“There were some individuals that really stood out this weekend. Grace Kelsheimer had a great day, specifically on 1m as she qualified for NCAA Zones by over 25 points. Eszter walking away with three wins across her event list, two of them being in the first half of the meet. Paige was stellar in her 100/200 breaststroke events, winning in season best times. Madeline (Hart), Mia (McBride) and Klava (Katayama) had great individual swims in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke and 100 Freestyle, respectively.”
Marshall’s other first-place finishes included Paige Banton in the 100 (1:04.16) and 200 Breaststroke (2:20.29), Madeline Hart in the 200 Freestyle (1:53.05), Klava Katayama in the Freestyle (52.65) and Mia McBride in the 200 Backstroke ((2:05.22)
“We’re in a good spot as a team and really proud of our women,” Walsh said. “We just need to remain healthy as we prepare for the Purdue Invitational in 10 days.”
