2022 IA DASH Spring Into Summer

  • June 4, 2022
  • Dubuque, IA
  • SCY (25 Yards)

Highlighting the meet held in Iowa was Miriam Sheehan who swims for Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes. The 17-year-old swam times of 53.45 in the 100 backstroke and 53.33 in the 100 butterfly. Those times were slightly off of her best times of 52.30 in the 100 back and 52.30 in the 100 fly which she swam back in February 2022 at the Iowa Short Course Championships.

Both times from this meet were faster than she was in 2021 though as her 2021 best time in the 100 back is a 54.06 and her 2021 best time in the 100 fly is a 53.88.

As of January 2022, Sheehan was the Iowa LSC record holder in the 17-18 and Open 100 backstroke after going a 53.06 at the beginning of January 2022. She has since been faster, but the record book has not been updated. Based on the record book, her best time in the 100 fly is also faster than the standing record as of January 2022. That record, in both the 17-18 and open age groups, stands at a 52.99 swam by Ruby Martin back in 2017.

Sheehan competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics representing Puerto Rico. There she swam the 100 fly and finished 31st with a time of 1:02.49. She also swam the 100 free where she swam a time of 56.64 to finish 38th.

Sheehan has made much progress in the short course yards pool over the last year that she has moved up from being not ranked in the SwimSwam class of 2023 rankings to now being ranked #11. Sheehan is one of the top recruits still not committed to college in the class of 2023.

Sheehan holds the Puerto Rican LCM National Records in the 50 back (28.89), 50 fly (26.67), and 100 fly (1:00.01).
