On night 1 of the 2024 Men’s NCAA Championships, Hobson broke the NCAA record in the 200 free (1:29.15) and then watched it fall moments later to Leon Marchand (1:28.97) as they both led off the 800 free relay.
Hobson had the final word last night, winning the individual 200 free and recording a 1:28.81 to re-break the record for the 3rd time in 3 days.
This is particularly poetic as it is legendary Texas head coach Eddie Reese’s final season heading the Longhorns. Reese has made a name for his program by coaching several men to NCAA titles and Olympic medals in the 200 free. It appears Hobson will be the final notch in that 200 Free belt for Reese.
I met Eddie when I was an age group coach in Wisconsin and Eddie came on a recruiting trip for one of the seniors on the team. Before practice, Eddie was genuine, playful and fully engaged with my group of 7-8 yr olds.
The 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials awaits Luke Hobson.

One of my few disappointments of this meet is that we didn’t see Hobson and Marchand race the 200 free.
Hobson would’ve lost
Since LM dodged the race we will never know
But Luke has faster times in the small and big pools so I guess we will have to rely on that little factoid
