Lorenzo Mora Lowers Own Italian Record En Route To 100 Backstroke Silver

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lorenzo Mora of Italy raced his way to a silver medal in the men’s 100m backstroke tonight, breaking his nation’s record in the process.

Finishing in second place behind winner Ryan Murphy of the United States who touched in 48.50, Mora blasted a new lifetime best of 49.04. That time overtook his own previous Italian record of 49.37, a mark he posted just last month at the Nico Sapio Trophy.

In tonight’s performance, 24-year-old Mora opened in 24.04 and brought it home in 25.00. That’s compared to his previous record’s splits of 23.72/25.65 showing how the Italian saved some speed for the back half this time around.

New Italian Record Former Italian Record
50m 24.04 23.72
100m 25.00 25.65
Final Time 49.04 49.37

Mora’s outing here renders him just outside the list of top 10 all-time performers worldwide, although he does become the 5th fastest European in history and the only non-Russian among that exclusive group.
