HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program closed its weekend action with victories at both the Houston Diving Invitational and Rice Fall Splash Invitational on Saturday.
At the Houston Diving Invitational, the Cougars swept the top four spots for a second consecutive day as five divers earned NCAA Zone Cuts in the platform event. At Rice, the Cougars finished with 21 podium spots, including five individual first-place finishes and one relay victory.
RICE FALL SPLASH INVITATIONAL
Sophomore Alondra Ortiz started day two strong for the Cougars as she secured her second first-place finish of the weekend with a 2:02.82 in the 200-yard butterfly and third in the 400-yard IM (4:30.43).
Junior Adelaide Meuter captured second place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.22) and Abbie Alvarez earned two third place finishes in both sessions of the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.40 and 2:04.74).
For a second consecutive day, fifth-year Audrey McKinnon placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.83) while junior Henrietta Fangli followed in second place (2:21.57).
Sophomore Liya Goupil continued the pace for Houston as she used a 51.83 in the 100-yard freestyle for first and earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.05).
Freshman Elizabeth Jimenez picked up her second collegiate first-place finish by touching the wall at 2:01.51 in the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Danielle Titus swam a 2:03.98 to claim second in the event and placed third in the 100-yard back (57.09).
The Cougars swept the 100-yard breaststroke as freshman Evelyn Entrekin clinched her first collegiate first-place finish with a 1:03.99, followed by Fangli in second (1:04.34) and McKinnon in third (1:04.62).
Junior Mary Catherine Jurica earned her second weekend podium as she placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.16).
Senior Anna Ervin earned her first podium of the weekend as she completed a 25.60 in the 50-yard butterfly.
The Cougars added two additional podium finishes in the 50-yard breaststroke as Fangli touched the wall for second (29.75) and Entrekin in third (30.12).
Houston’s squad of Jurica, Goupil, Jimenez and Meuter sealed the victory for the Cougars at the Rice Fall Splash Invitational, as the group posted a 3:29.98 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Cougars finished in first place with scores of 436.5 and 428. Rice placed second (376.5, 373) and Denver finished third (310, 286).
HOUSTON DIVING INVITATIONAL
Fifth-year Chase Farris earned her second first-place finish of the weekend as she led the way in Houston’s sweep in the platform competition. Farris took first (247.20), followed by freshman Michelle McLeod in second (246.60) and junior Josie Graves in third (238.15) and junior Alexa Massari in sixth (225.05).
Farris, McLeod, Graves, Grelz and Massari each earned NCAA Zone Cuts in the platform competition.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will head to New Orleans for a dual meet against Tulane on Saturday, Nov. 4., at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.

In Brief: The Owls captured 10 more titles on day two, with five first-place finishes in each session. Rice placed second as a team for the full meet.
The Details: The Owls started session two with the 200-yard medley relay, where senior Imogen Meers and freshmen Siiri Einio, Catherine Eland and Neta Ussishkin combined to finish first with a time of 1:44.68. Meers and Ussishkin also competed alongside juniors Arielle Hayon and Morgan Bartley in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish first with a time of 1:35.99. Hayon registered another first-place finish, her fifth of the weekend, in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 24.80. Junior Amelia Kane took first in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:24.16. The Owls went one-two in the 500-yard freestyle as sophomore Ella Dyson placed first with a time of 4:55.95 and graduate senior Shannon Campbell finished second with a time of 4:58.32.
In session three, Ussishkin, Einio, Hayon and Meers combined for a win in the 100-yard medley relay, recording a time of 47.02. The Owls went 1-2-3 in the 1,000-yard freestyle as Dyson finished first with a time of 10:05.54. Campbell and Kane placed second and third, respectively, with times of 10:13.75 and 10:14.96. Einio also won the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 29.33 and senior Elizabeth Myers won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.94. Meers capped off Rice’s weekend with a win in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 57.74. The Owls finished the weekend in second place as a team with 376.5 points. Houston placed first with 436.5 points and Denver finished third with 286.
Up Next: Rice returns to the pool on Friday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m. (CT) when they host the University of St. Thomas (TX) at the Rice Competition Pool.

HOUSTON – The University of Denver women’s swimming and diving program got a pair of wins from upperclassmen in the third and final session of the 2023 Rice Fall Splash Invitational at the Rice Competition Pool.

Event Wins:
Women’s 50 Free – Erika Remington – 23.84
Women’s 200 Free – Ines Marin – 1:51.23
Erika Remington got the Pioneers in the win column in the third and final session of the weekend, continuing her impressive sprint weekend in Houston with a 23.84 in the 50 free. Megan Lucyshyn also earned a fourth-place finish in the race in 24.28.
Ali Beay picked up another podium in the women’s 100 back on Saturday afternoon, clocking in at 56.61 to take second.
A second win in as many sessions for Ines Marin saw the senior complete the women’s 200 free in 1:51.23.
Lilly Zippel completed her IM weekend with her third podium in as many races, this time swimming the 100 IM in 58.07 to finish second.
Saturday’s meet concluded with the women’s 400 free relay. Denver’s A-Relay took third in the final race, completing the event in 3:31.30 courtesy of swims from Marin, Lucyshyn, Kali Metuzals and Remington.
UP NEXT: Denver returns to the state of Colorado for a single meet next weekend when the Pioneers take the trip south on I-25 to the Air Force Academy. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. MT.
