Freshman Jeremy Kelly Announces Transfer From Texas To Notre Dame

Jeremy Kelly has announced he will transfer to Notre Dame after spending his freshman season at Texas. Kelly was a best of the rest (BOTR) ranked recruit coming out of high school and is originally from Georgetown, Texas.

Kelly competed for the Longhorns this season but did not compete at SECs. He instead finished his collegiate season at the Eddie Reese Showdown in January and swam at two Sectionals meets in March. His swims at the Eddie Reese Showdown included best times in the 100 (54.57) and 200 (1:59.57) breaststrokes. Kelly was one of at least eight Longhorns in the transfer portal the day it opened.

At the end of March, he swam four lifetime bests at Sectionals in Austin. He swam to a 43.43 100 free, 1:34.79 200 free, 46.80 100 back, and 1:43.88 200 back.

Kelly joins a Notre Dame men’s swimming team that is coming off of a suspension. Prior to the season long suspension, the team had upward momentum as they were 2nd at 2024 ACCs and 10th at 2024 NCAAs. Kelly’s best 200 free time would have been #2 on the team’s roster in the 2023-2024 season only behind Chris Guiliano who represented the US at the Paris Olympics last summer. Guiliano notably transferred to Texas this past season. The arrival of Kelly is key as the program looks to get back on its positive momentum.

In addition to Guiliano, the team was also home to Tommy Janton who finaled in both backstroke events at 2024 NCAAs. He was 8th in the 200 (1:40.25) and 11th in the 100 (44.75). Janton has ND Swimming ’26 in his Instagram bio so the two will overlap this upcoming season.

If a team could develop a pipeline of transfers from Texas each year you could have a pretty good team. Maybe Guiliano taking a year at Texas will pay off for Notre Dame in the long run

I’m not the first to bet he won’t pan out there, but then again, there are odds he benefits but being a big fish in a little pool. I bet he would be one the fastest at Notre Dame after all that happened there. Though, in my final statement, I wouldn’t gamble on his odds of winning it all.

I’ll wager he’s going to be fine. Odds are he will be successful.

Long Strokes did it better

Super impressive end of season meet given he and the other boys had to train on their own when they were cut unnecessarily early from the roster. Eddie helped, because that’s who Eddie is and it was the right thing to do. Best of luck!

Eddie is a true gentleman and fantastic person…his legacy continues to build with all of these young men he is supporting

Jacob Wimberly just committed to Texas. So someone like Kelly get dropped to bring on Wimberly? He isn’t much faster and somewhat swims the same events so I don’t get this move. Also, who is getting dropped for Wimberly to come on the team? This isn’t making much sense to me

Well, they’re in the same class and they have similar event lineups, but Wimberly is quite a bit faster in most (but not all) of them – and was faster in those races while training with Blaire Bachmann, who the A&M guys seem to think is ruining the team.

It’s not a huge upgrade (Kelly had a better 200 IM), but I would say that overall Wimberly had a better freshman season of the two.

I forgot Wimberly went 46.2 in the 100 fly a couple years back. I can see why he’d be brought on board, Texas could use more in the butterfly events. Also is a faster freestyler for the relays.

Now my question is who gets dropped from the current roster? I think they have 6 divers (1 coming in) and 19 swimmers (5 coming in). This doesn’t even factor in Baylor Nelson, who more likely than not is going to Texas. So either some aren’t coming in as freshmen (probably the likeliest choice) or more guys aren’t returning next year that think they are

They’ll dump one of their commits. That’s how this works now. Probably the kid from California (if they haven’t already).

Which kid from California are you referencing? The only committed kid from California I can think of is Maksymowski and he’s 2026, not 2025

Bingo – So either some aren’t coming in as freshmen (probably the likeliest choice) or more guys aren’t returning next year that think they are

It will be a cruel summer for a few who do not know it yet …

There’s a level of uncertainty with the 22 roster limit stuff and I get navigating around that will be difficult, but all of this seems so extra that idk how to feel about it

SEC roster caps suck!

That’s not a great take Braden. He is materially faster in the 2free but slower in the 2IM. And, JK was already on the team so you add the cultural challenges this creates cutting one kid and bringing in another with similar skillsets. Plus – why did they have JK train all year as a breastroker? I think the points you raise about the training that the A&M guys got could reasonably be applied to JK’s situation – if you want to dig into it.
