2022 WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – EAST

At the 2022 Winter Junior – East, Erika Pelaez swam a 21.91 to take second place in the girls’ 50 freestyle and become the 4th-fastest performer in the age group in history. Swimming in the same heat, Alex Shackell hit a 21.73 to win the event and become #2 overall.

The leader in the age group is Claire Curzan who swam a 21.50 in 2021. Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske previously held the #2 and #3 positions with their respective 21.82 and 21.95 swims.

15-16 Girls 50 Freestyle Short Course Yards All-Time Rankings

  1. Claire Curzan – 21.50 (2021)
  2. Alex Shackell – 21.73 (2022)
  3. Gretchen Walsh – 21.82 (2018)
  4. Erika Pelaez – 21.91 (2022)
  5. Torri Huske – 21.95 (2019)
  6. Anna Moesch – 21.97 (2022)
  7. Simone Manuel/Kate Douglass – 22.04Β  (2013/2016)

This meet marks the first time that Pelaez has cracked 22 seconds in the 50 freestyle. Her previous PB was a 22.29, which she swam at the Florida High School Class 1A State Championships. At this meet last year she pulled off a 4th-place finish with a 22.40. A 21.91 is more than a second off her season-best before Winter Juniors of 24.31, which she hit at the Woodson Invitational in September.

Pelaez, an NC State commit, had a successful summer, which included making 5 different finals at the Phillips 66 National Championships. That included the 50 freestyle, along with the 100 free, 100, and 200 backstrokes, and the 100 butterfly.

Both Pelaez and Shackell were quicker than all performers at the West meet where Avery Karl was first in the 50 freestyle with a 22.22. Pelaez has also entered to race in the 100 freestyle, in which she’s the top seed (48.08), the 200 freestyle, and the 100 backstroke.
