Dressel Sniffing National High School Record in Prelims of FSPA Meet

Caeleb Dressel is on the verge of becoming one of the most special high school swimmers we’ve ever seen.

The Clay High School senior, at the mid-season FSPA Invitational in Florida this morning, very nearly broke one National High School Record, and that’s just in prelims.

First, he was a 19.56 in the 50 yard free; Bolles’ William Mckinney was 2nd in 21.27. The national public and overall high school records in that race belong to Vlad Morozov at 19.43. (The public record, not relevant here, is 19.54 by Ryan Murphy).

He followed that up after the diving break with a casual 49.57 in the 100 yard fly, which put him ahead of his club teammate Joe Schooling, who swims high school for Bolles, and his 50.36. Note that Schooling is the National High School Record holder in that 100 yard fly, and expect both to be much, much faster in finals. Bolles actually had the 2-5 seeds in that race, meaning a single club program has at least 5 guys going 52.50 or better without any kind of rest.

Schooling’s other race was the 200 yard IM, where he cruised to a prelims 1:51.62. Based on how relaxed he looked in that swim, he’s got a shot there of going after Curtis Ogren’s National Private High School Record of 1:45.01, though Nolan’s overall record in that race of 1:41.39 probably isn’t in the picture (at least yet).

Just about every race, on the men’s and women’s side, in the morning had a really impressive swim. We’ll provide a full recap on the day’s races after finals, which begin at 6PM Eastern Time. Remember that this is the meet where in 2012 Bolles broke the National High School Records in both the 200 and 400 yard free relays.

Full meet results are available via Meet Mobile.

I think he will go 19.2 in finals for the 50, and 47 low 100 fly. 🙂

A sub 19 isn’t out of reach in the next weeks.
And after his high school season, he will deserve a little break. 🙂
