First-time champions were the theme of the 2025 Texas 5A High School State Championships, as the Boerne Champion girls and the Prosper Walnut Grove boys each captured state titles for the first time in program history.
For both teams, it also took results in the final event of the meet to claim the championships.
GIRLS’ RECAP
Trailing by 15 points going into the final event of the girls’ meet, Boerne Champion’s team of Cara Skoog, Karly Whitehead, Cameron Kellogg and Kate Canales won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:28.50.
The Chargers finished with 176 points, just three ahead of runner-up Frisco Reedy.
Champion won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:28.50 to edge out Frisco Reedy. Prosper Walnut Grove was third at 163 points.
In addition to swimming the anchor leg for the 400 freestyle relay team that clinched the team state title, Kate Canales was one of the individual stars of the meet.
She won the 100 butterfly in a time of 54.87 and then broke her own state record set in preliminaries in the 100 breaststroke, winning with a time of 1:00.79 (she swam 1:01.43 in preliminaries).
Canales also swam on the second leg of Champion’s winning team in the 200 medley relay, which clocked a time of 1:43.79. Whitehead (lead), Kellogg (third) and Skoog (anchor) were also a part of that team.
KK LeBlanc (Ohio State signee) of Friendswood was another individual star, first repeating as champion in the 200 freestyle in a record time of 1:46.32 (old record was 1:46.39, set by Ann Herceg of Pflugerville Weiss in 2019), and also defending her title in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.99.
LeBlanc also swam lead-off for Friendswood’s winning team in the 200 freestyle relay, alongside Paige McCray, Andelynn Jeanes and Lauren Tillman. The team clocked a winning time of 1:35.81.
Also winning two events was Prosper Walnut Grove junior Morgan Farlow (North Carolina commit), who won the 200 IM in a time of 2:01.70 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:51.81.
Other individual winners
Ella Mongenel. The Texas signee and Cedar Park swimmer won the 50 freestyle in a time of 22.96. Maria Faoro. The senior from Lucas Lovejoy won diving with 466.55 points, avenging last year when she lost out on a title by 2.5 points as the runner-up. Brooke Frushour. A sophomore for Leander, she won the 100 backstroke in 55.27, outlasting Angelina Huang (Rice signee) of Highland Park by .18 seconds.

BOYS’ RECAP
The boys’ meet had just as exciting of a conclusion, with Prosper Walnut Grove also winning its first-ever state title with a rally in the final event.
A fifth-place finish in the 400 free relay by Walnut Grove (3:05.82) was just enough to get it on top of the state with 180 points, two ahead of Georgetown and 2.5 points ahead of third-place Frisco Wakeland.
Frisco Wakeland led going into the final event with a total of 153.5 points, while Walnut Grove had 152 and Georgetown 144.
Georgetown finished second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:04.43), but fell just short. Fort Bend Kempner won the event with a time of 3:02.69. Frisco Wakeland was seventh at 3:08.56.
The swimmer of the meet was Jack Armour of Frisco Armour, who has signed with Notre Dame. Jack Armour set a pair of state records, winning the 200 IM in a time of 1:46.01 (old record was 1:47.34 by Tony Laurito of Friendswood in 2023) and the 100 breaststroke in a time of 52.79, breaking a record set in preliminaries by Gunnar Hansen of Lubbock.
Other individual standouts were Jack Boysen of Fort Bend Kempner (Wyoming signee) and Grayden Barker (BYU commit) of Prosper Walnut Grove.
Jack Boysen set a state record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.79 (old record was 19.88 set by Connor Foote of San Antonio Alamo Heights in 2022) and won the 100 freestyle in a record time of 43.55 (old record was 43.67, set by Jeremy Kelly of Georgetown in 2024). He also led off with a split of 43.97 to help Kempner win the 400 freestyle relay.
Grayden Barker won the 100 butterfly in a time of 48.69 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:26.31.
Other winners
Bexon Harrison. A senior for Boerne Champion and South Carolina signee, he won the 200 freestyle with a record time of 1:35.67, breaking the record of 1:35.73 he set in preliminaries. He also swam lead-off leg for Champion’s winning team in the 200 freestyle relay, which clocked a time of 1:22.95. William Harrison, Ethan Altermatt and Will Tolar were other members of the team. Daniel Henry. The junior from Arlington Mansfield Timberview won diving with 486.5 points. Arthur Newton. A senior from Fort Bend Kempner, he won the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.48.
Georgetown’s team of Roger Henson, Troy Reed, Marcus Pineiro and Maddox Azuma-Hall won the 200 medley relay in a meet time of 1:32.67.
