Australia tops the swimming and overall medal table at the end of the first night of competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Ariarne Titmus picked up the team’s first gold medal in the pool swimming to a win in the women’s 400 freestyle. Later in the session, the Australian women picked up another medal winning the 4×100 freestyle relay in a new Olympic record, breaking their own record from the 2020 Tokyo Games.
The US also had a busy night, winning three total medals. The US men’s 4×100 free relay closed the night with gold, ensuring a rebound from a gold-less night 1 at the World Championships last summer.
Germany’s Lukas Maertens won the men’s 400 free to win the first overall swimming medal of the meet. Germany did not win any gold medals in the pool in Tokyo.
Canada has 1 silver so far as teenage superstar Summer McIntosh picked up her first-ever Olympic medal with silver in the 400 freestyle.

Could have been a massive first night for Australia with favorites in all 4 races. Only ended up with 2 golds and USA took home men’s relay gold which wasn’t a guarantee. It will be a close finish to see who tops the swimming medal table in Paris!
They were not favorites in men’s races, Martens and US relay were favorites. US relay were in fact massive favs, 1.2-1.25
Uh. Australia was never the favorite in men’s 4×100 free lol.
The consensus was USA gold, GBR silver, and China/Australia/Italy fighting for bronze. Many including myself predicted USA to break m4x100 free WR
Martens was always one of the favorites, and became firm favorite after that prelims.

Enjoy while you can. Cowbells coming, Look at final line up. No chance for Aussie to add any medal on day 2.
Didn’t I say so all negative voters. How many did they add? Zero!
And in other news, the sky is blue. We knew this was Australia’s big night. The US will come back as the meet goes on.

obviously a very good night for Australia. But a good night for the US also–I think 1 G/1 S/1 B was the realistic expectation. Hopefully the energy from that relay win will keep things moving the next few days to avoid a repeat of Fukuoka
Winning total and golds so NBC can’t pull a switcheroo just yet (they’ll do it tomorrow though)
Swimdad won’t be happy with those medal tables.
Unlike other countries, Americans ALWAYS go by overall medal count. This is regardless of whether or not they win the most golds, and has nothing to do with how Australia, China or the rest of the world is doing.
I worked in media many years back and during London 2012, we had to deal with American expats calling in to ask why our medal tally was “wrong” all the time.
I am as annoyed by the whole GO USA thing as most other non-Americans, but attributing medal tables to a conspiracy theory is patently silly.
Do they? NBC switched mid championships last year when it was clear they couldn’t win.
