Auburn Brings In Anastasia Makarova and Lewis Treggiden Mid-Season

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Auburn Swimming and Diving teams are adding Anastasia Makarova of Russia and Lewis Treggiden from Australia to the 2021-22 rosters. They will join Josh Cobia, another mid-season newcomer for the Tigers, who had originally committed to LSU but took time off to recover from injuries before changing his commitment to Auburn.

Anastasia Makarova

Makarova, a breaststroke specialist, hails from Pushkino, Russia, where she attended Gymnasium No. 1. She won three gold medals, a silver, and a bronze at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. In 2019, she won three silver medals at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and swam personal bests in the LCM 100/200 breast. This fall, Makarova was a finalist in both the 100 breast and 200 breast at the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup in Kazan.

Best LCM times:

  • 100 breast – 1:07.10 (58.64)
  • 200 breast – 2:24.39 (2:06.47)

Makarova’s best times, converted, would make her the Tigers’ best breaststroker by quite a margin. Those are times that would have scored in the A finals (top-3) in both distances at the 2021 SEC Women’s Championships, where Auburn had no swimmers. They also would have landed her in the A final of the 200 breast and the B final of the 100 breast at 2021 NCAA Division I Championships.

Lewis Treggiden

Treggiden comes from Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. He attended high school at Marymount College and swam at Bond Swimming Club, where he concentrated on freestyle and backstroke. He qualified for four events at Australia’s Olympic Trials and ended up competing in the 50 free and 100 free, earning PBs in both. Two months earlier, he swam at Australian Age Championships and placed 7th in the 50 free, 7th in the 100 free, 5th in the 100 back, and 5th in the 200 back.

Best LCM times (converted to SCY):

  • 50 free – 22.97 (19.97)
  • 100 free – 51.07 (44.56)
  • 200 free – 1:57.85 (1:43.28)
  • 50 back – 27.24 (23.99)
  • 100 back – 57.31 (50.54)
  • 200 back – 2:04.69 (1:50.17)

Only 4 women in the NCAA have a better PB than Makarova in the 100, and only 1 in the 200. That’s such tremendous upside if she can find 2019 form again, and if she doesn’t get all the way back, she’s still their best breaststroker by a decent margin.
