Just a couple of weeks after turning in a strong performance at the LIAC Virtual Short Course Championships, high school junior Denise Phelan from Commack, New York announced her verbal commitment to the University of Kentucky Wildcats for the 2022-23 school year.

Phelan swims for Team Suffolk and Commack High School. She is a breast/IM specialist who has shown steady improvement over the last year. She swam lifetime bests in the 100 free (51.33), 100 back (56.87), 200 back (2:03.44), 100 breast (1:00.62), and 400 IM (4:18.91) and came with .20 of her PB (2:11.23) in the 200 breast at the LIAC Virtual Championships. At 2020 U.S. Open in Richmond, she was a top-8 finisher in both the 100m breast (1:12.75) and 200m breast (2:36.44), notching PBs in both events. She took another .4 off the 100 breast in January at the PSS in Richmond.
Phelan has a wide range of events, excelling in free, back, and fly in addition to the breast/IM duo. Last fall she swam at a series of LIAC meets and lowered her times in the 200 free, 200 breast, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM.

Phelan will suit up for the Wildcats with Grace Frericks, Jordan Agliano, Lucy Reber, Lydia Hanlon, Marin McKee, Paige Taber, and Stella Todd. She will have an immediate impact on the breaststroke group, as Kentucky graduated two of its top three breaststrokers this year. She will overlap with Gillian Davey, Lauren Poole, Anna Havens Rice, Bridget Engel, and Jodi Ogle.
