Caeleb Dressel Swims Personal Best 1:32.57 200 SCY Freestyle During Florida Invitational

2024 FLORIDA INVITATIONAL

  • Results on MeetMobile: “2024 Florida Invitational” Note: Pro Swimmer Results are not available

Caeleb Dressel and other members of the pro group training out of the University of Florida got some yards racing in during night two of the Florida Invitational.

Dressel raced the 200 short course yards freestyle. Dressel touched in a 1:32.57. Kieran Smith, and Mark Szaranek raced the 200 IM. Smith touched in a 1:41.64, and Szaranek touched in a 1:44.25. Nina Kucheran also swam the 200 IM, touching in a 2:10.32.

Dressel’s time was a personal best as his previous best was a 1:33.42 which he swam during his college days back in 2017. Dressel raced the event in October 2023 where he clocked a 1:34.98. To put into perspective where Dressel’s time from today would currently rank in the NCAA, it would be the 12th fastest time this season, right ahead of Leon Marchand of Arizona State. Dressel never competed in the 200 freestyle at SECs or NCAAs during his time at Florida.

Smith’s time was a personal best as his previous best stood at a 1:41.72 from the 2020 dual meet between Auburn and Florida. Szaranek has a best time of a 1:40.27.

Katie Ledecky and Natalie Hinds raced the 400 yard freestyle, although their times are unavailable. The two swam in the same heat as Bobby Finke who swam a 400 IM and touched in a 3:40.01.

Finke has a personal best of a 3:36.83 in the event at the 2022 NCAA Championships which he swam to finish 4th.

Training must be going incredibly well. 1:32 is so meaningful for this swimmer, on a host of levels.

A host of levels?

He probably saw the laughable rankings on swimswam and decided to casually rip a PB in an off event.
He’ll be just fine. Never underestimate the heart of a champion.

He was properly ranked in my opinion if not slightly higher than expected. He’s a top 5 talent if he hits his stride but he hasn’t swum a top 50 worthy time in the past year.

You have to consider the swimmers body of work. He hasn’t swum a top 50 time because he has been out. Given the same preparation as his competitors Dressel is a top 5 swimmer in all his primary events.

Not that surprising, given his PB was from 2017?

He won 7 World titles in 2017 and 3 individual NCAA titles. It is surprising.

I meant it is not surprising that he has improved in that event in close to 7 years.

Although he went a best time, most realize that if he swam it at a big meet suited back in college he would have been faster 1:32.

1:32 is a great swim and leads us all to believe he’s getting better and better but we all know he could have been better in 2017-2018 when he last swam SCY on a regular basis.

Yes, let’s hope so. It would be great to see him back to his best.

I still believe gregg troys biggest mistake was not letting this man rip a tapered 200y free.

I mean short course is a sprint. We saw Leon’s split last year and his freestyle isn’t that amazing. It was because of his incredible underwaters, Leon is an aerobic machine like no other and once again the 200 yard swim of any discipline is a sprint. 1:28.42 is the fastest we’ve seen right about (it’s at least on par roughly with Dean Farris 1:29.15.)

Dressel swam 17.63!!!!!! He had the endurance to maintain that speed for a 46.96 in the big pool.

He could go 1:27 no cap first swim rested prime 2018 NCAA form

well let’s think about splits for a second. Since he broke 40, could he could go out 41 high and have enough left to come back in a 44?

From the energy sources and timing perspective, the only real sprint in swimming is 50m. Even 100m swim is more comparable to 400m run, than to a real sprint.

It’s respect for the “speed endurance” of the 400m sprinter I’m extending to Dressel. Many 400m runners are at least decent at the 800m

200 yards is a completely different beast than 200 lcm.

And let’s not forgetting Dressel was setting NAGs in the 200 lcm…

We’re dreaming but 1:27.x high realistically does seem feasible

I always wondered if he could’ve ripped a 41+ 100 fly split from a relay exchange…

I hope Nesty allows Liendo to do a tapered 200 at some point. The 200 yards corresponds well to the long course 100, and he’s got the speed for sure.

Maybe we’ll still see Caeleb swim a tapered 200y free. Isn’t the US Open in yards this year? That could be a really fun meet.

I doubt that was his “biggest mistake.”

That’s a good sign, Caeleb! Also just watched Alexy in person at SC today. Easy speed in the 100. Can’t wait to see who gets on the 4×100 FR for Paris.
