SOUTH AMERICAN RECAP – DAY 4

The 4th day of the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka was another great one. In terms of the swimmers representing South American countries on day 4, I didn’t see any national records, but there were still some great swims.

Starting out with the lone South American finalist of the day, Brazilian distance star Guilherme Costa competed in the final of the men’s 800 free tonight. After qualifying 8th to the final yesterday, Costa managed to move up in the final tonight, touching 7th with a time of 7:47.26. While the time was a bit off the 7:45.80 he swam in prelims yesterday, Costa’s performance was still a positive one, as he continues to solidify himself as a c0nsistent finalist on the world stage. Costa holds the Brazilian and South American Records in the men’s 800 free at 7:45.48, a time which he swam at last summer’s World Championships.

Another Brazilian, Guilherme Santos, advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 100 free today. Santos clocked a 48.34 in prelims this morning, finishing 16th in what turned out to be the fastest 100 free prelims in history. He just scraped in by 0.02 seconds, but Santos secured a lane for the semis, and that’s the overall goal.

Santos put up a great swim in semifinals tonight, moving up to 12th with a 48.18, taking 0.16 seconds off his prelims time. While he missed out on qualifying for the final, Santos was only 0.12 seconds out of 8th place tonight, marking a very solid performance for the 20-year-old.

Argentina’s Andrea Berrino clocked a 28.24 to finish 16th in prelims of the women’s 50 back this morning, finishing 16th and qualifying for the semifinals. Berrino holds the Argentine Record in the 50 back at 27.80, a time which she set back at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest. In semifinals tonight, Berrino again finished 16th in the 50 back, clocking a 28.34 this time.
