Match 4 of ISL season 3 is ready to go here in Naples, as the Cali Condors will aim to take their second match win of the regular season against the LA Current, DC Trident, and Aqua Centurions. The Condors won the 2020 season, while LA Current made the semifinal round and placed 4th overall. Peering at the season club standings, the Aqua Centurions are in a four-way tie for 6th while the DC Trident is aiming to better their 10th-place ranking.

The NY Breakers also tie for 6th, but placed 4th in their second match, giving the Trident an opportunity to pass Aqua if they place no lower than 3rd for this match.

Kelsi Dahlia blasted off the last wall to dominate the 100 fly event with a new ISL record of 55.22, taking a tenth off of Beryl Gastaldello‘s league record of 55.32. Dahlia picked up an additional three jackpot points for a total of 12 points, the same amount she scored last week. 

Picking up second-place points for the Aqua Centurions was Elena di Liddo, who was the only other swimmer to close under 30 seconds.

Caeleb Dressel takes another 100 fly win with a dominant swim of 48.53, picking up 5 more jackpot points than last week for a 15-point pick-up. Swimming behind LA’s Tom Shields for third place, a six-point pick-up, was backstroker Coleman Stewart for the Condors.

Dressel’s improved jackpot pick-up negatively affected the DC Trident, as both Zach Harting and Camden Murphy lost points despite solid swims of 50.49 and 50.64.

Improving from her 2:03.9 from match 2 to swim 2:01.11 and improving to a jackpot-aided 19-point pick-up was Beata Nelson. The Condors picked up another 1-3 finish as fly/free sprinter Erika Brown held on for third place behind LA’s Ingrid Wilm.

While LA out-scored DC 7-5 in this event, Aqua didn’t score any points.

Sprinter Maxime Rooney of the LA Current led the first 100 of this race. Meanwhile, Jacob Pebley of the DC Trident steadily moved from 5th to 3rd to 2nd at each 50 checkpoint until he made his move on the last 50. Pebley took his first ISL event win with a time of 1:50.29, picking up 12 points.

The Aqua Centurions finished 2-4, courtesy of Leonardo de Deus and Matteo Ciampi, while Rooney wound up with third-place points.

Cali does it again as Lilly King and Emily Escobedo picked up another 1-2 finish, worth 19 points total. LA’s Anastasia Gorbenko held off DC’s Maria Temnikova for third-place points by 0.18s.

Aqua only out-scored LA by one point, 7-6, in their strong suit stroke event.

Aqua’s Nicolo Martinenghi and Arno Kamminga set the pace during the first 50 of the race. Then, Cali’s Kevin Cordes responded at the halfway point by taking over the lead. Into the final 150, Kamminga and DC’s Tommy Cope pushed the rest of the field into the last length.

However, Cali’s Nic Fink closed in a blistering 31.03 to touch out Cope by one one-hundredth at the finish, 2:03.82 to 2:03.83. Martinenghi and Kamminga placed 3rd and 6th respectively for Aqua, out-scoring LA 9-7.

DC took the lead on the first two legs with Linnea Mack and Anna Hopkin putting up 52.08 and 52.12, respectively. DC held on with a 0.07s-lead ahead of the inching LA Current following Beryl Gastaldello’s 52.48 leg.

Then, LA anchor Abbey Weitzeil rocketed out in a 23.93 to give the Current an un-breakable lead. Weitzeil split 51.34 to aid LA’s 24-point winning time of 3:29.44. 

The Cali Condors’ relays placed 2-5 while LA’s second relay placed 7th, losing jackpot points . Despite this, LA out-scored Cali in this event 24-22.

MEN’S 50M FREESTYLE

Caeleb Dressel stormed to another 15-point pick-up, this time by swimming 20.67 in the 50 free. Swimming 21.24 to give the Condors another 1-2 finish was sprinter Justin Ress. While Alessandro Miressi placed third, Szebastian Szabo got disqualified, a 2-point deduction to reduce Aqua’s total points to four.

Less than a half hour after splitting 51.63 to anchor the free relay, LA’s Abbey Weitzeil swam 23.63 for a 15-point pick-up. Teammate Madi Wilson clocked in a clutch 24.19 for a LA 1-2 finish. Meanwhile, Aqua finished 3-4 thanks to Silvia di Pietro and Mariia Kameneva.

With this, LA out-scored Aqua in this event 22-11 while Cali scored no points.

As LA’s Abrahm DeVine held onto the lead entering freestyle, versatile DC swimmer Andreas Vazaios closed in a strong 27.11 to take the 10-point win. As DeVine faded to fourth place, Tomoe Hvas came in for second-place points while Aqua’s Chase Kalisz busted 31.66 on the breast to build into his third-place finish.

Anastasia Gorbenko led this race from start to finish, earning a 10-point pick-up. Meanwhile, teammate Sara Franceschi took third place for an LA 1-3 finish worth 16 total points. Taking a 2-4 finish for DC were Bailey Andison and Zsuzsanna Jakabos, totaling up 12 points.

Once again, Cali lost points in an event from jackpot.

After only scoring 4 points in the previous event, Nicolo Martinenghi and Fabio Scozzoli came together for a 1-3 finish, contributing 16 points for the Aqua Centurions.

Coming in for second-place points was Nic Fink for Cali. Teammate Oleg Kostin took fifth place for total of 11 points.

Coming in for another 12-point win was Cali’s Lilly King, holding off Aqua’s Arianna Castiglioni and Martina Carraro, who picked up 12 points as a duo. Cali’s Molly Hannis picked up third place points to bump up Cali’s point pick-up to 18.

The top Aqua Centurion relay featured a blazing lead-off by Alessandro Miressi at 46.29, followed by Thomas Ceccon (47.15), Vladislav Grinev (46.15), and Marcelo Chierighini (46.49) to hold off Cali for the win, 3:06.08 to 3:06.21. Splitting 45.01 on Cali’s relay was Caeleb Dressel.

Aqua only scored 28 points total, however, since their last relay received a 2-point deduction. At the same time, Cali’s 7th-place “B” relay got jackpotted.

Coming in for a clutch 1-2 finish for the DC Trident were Ali DeLoof and Linnea Mack, swimming 26.25 to 26.26 for a 16-point pick-up. Holding off Cali’s Sherridon Dressel for third-place points for the LA Current was Ingrid Wilm, 26.28 to 26.33.

Both LA and Cali picked up 8 points each while Aqua earned 5 points.

Taking another 50 back win with a sub-23 effort of 22.98 for Cali was Coleman Stewart, picking up 10 points. Finishing 3-4 for DC for 11 points behind LA’s Apostolos Christou were Trident teammates Mark Nikolaev and Andreas Vazaios.

LA’s Madi Wilson and DC pair Leah Neale and Joanna Evans set the pace in efforts to pick up another 1-2 finish following their 50 back performance. On the last 25, however, Wilson closed on the DC teammates. At the touch, both Neale and Wilson clocked in 4:02.98 to split up first-place points.

Wilson picked up 14.5 points to teammate Valentine Dumont‘s 6 points for 20.5 total points while DC’s Neale and Evans earned 21.5 points together.

Responding to Wilson’s win in the women’s event were LA teammates Martin Malyutin and Fernando Scheffer, who led at the 200-meter mark and held onto their pace. Malyutin clocked in the winning time of 3:40.39 while Scheffer took second place  at 3:41.15. Both Malyutin and Scheffer scored 13 points each, with Malyutin taking the half-point advantage, to combine for 26.5 points total in this 400-meter event.

Picking up the third-most points with 8.5 points was DC’s Zane Grothe, contributing to their 11.5-point pick-up alongside Velimir Stjepanovic. However, Aqua’s Matteo Ciampi and Stefano Ballo combined for 15 points with their identical scores of 7.5 points.

After a quiet start, the Cali Condors picked things up in the back-half of this relay with powerful splits by Kelsi Dahlia (55.19) and Erika Brown (52.25). However, Aqua also had strong-half legs, courtesy of Elena di Liddo (55.69) and Federica Pellegrini (52.81). At the touch, it was the Condors who held off Aqua 3;48.68 to 3:49.24 for the 20-point win.

The Condor’s second relay placed third, totaling 32 points. Meanwhile, Aqua’s sixth-place relay bumped their point pick-up to 20.

The Cali Condors’ top relay of Coleman Stewart (49.82), Nic Fink (55.98), Caeleb Dressel (48.81), and Justin Ress (46.07) dominated with a 3:20.68 for a 30-point pick-up. Picking up 26 total points with their 2-3 finish were the Aqua Centurions.

Breaststrokers  Nicolo Martinenghi (56.06) and Arno Kamminga (56.55) put their relays into the top three heading into the fly legs while Marcelo Chierighini (46.35) and Alesandro Miressi (46.41) put Aqua back into 2-3 position after LA’s Tom Shields put up 48.96 on his fly leg. LA wound up in fourth place with 10 total points.
