Jeremy Kipp: ‘I Have 3 Years Left on My Contract’ at Northwestern

Despite rumors circulating that he was the choice for the head coaching job at USC, Northwestern head coach of two years Jeremy Kipp twice said that he has “three years left on [his] contract” at Northwestern in a CSCAA webinar Tuesday.

In the introduction to his presentation, Kipp wrote: “Just finished second year at Northwestern and despite what you have heard, 3 years left on my contract…” While he didn’t explicitly say he wasn’t taking the job at USC, he later talked about it again.

“I just finished my 2nd year at Northwestern. Really excited about the 3 years I have left on my contract,” Kipp said.

CSCAA Director of Operations Matt Zimmer then cut in to joke, “So you’ve confirmed that, you have three years left on your contract,” to which Kipp joked, “That’s what… my boss told me.”

SwimSwam has reached out to Kipp to get explicit confirmation that his comments mean he’s staying at Northwestern for next season, but he hasn’t responded as of publishing.

Kipp was named the head coach of Northwestern’s coed program in May 2018 after a stint as head coach at Boise State. He previously spent eight seasons with the Trojans working under former head coach Dave Salo – three seasons as an assistant coach and five as the head assistant – from 2008-2015. Kipp’s time in Southern California culminated with USC’s men winning their first Pac-12 title.

Prior to USC, Kipp spent eight seasons on staff at UC Santa Barbara. He also has international coaching experience – Kipp worked with the Polish and Austrian national teams – and served as personal coach to Olympians Markus Rogan and USC alum Oussama Mellouli.

Salo announced in January that the 2019-20 NCAA season would be his last with USC’s program, though he would stay in town to focus on swimmers who are Olympic hopefuls. He was named Pac-12 Women’s Coach of the Year after his final Pac-12 Championships (which, due the coronavirus pandemic, ended up being his last collegiate meet). In February, the Trojan women finished in third place with 1,212 points, just 12.5 points behind Cal, the 2019 NCAA runner-ups, for the title.

USC’s opening is by far the biggest of the 2020 NCAA offseason so far. Schools with head coach positions currently open also include Pepperdine, Western Illinois, Cal Poly, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Siena College, and UNC Wilmington.

One foot out the door. He stayed at Boise a grand total of 3 seasons… I don’t expect him to stay at Northwestern.

Sounds like Kipp going is legit, but the knee jerk here to assume the Associate Head Coach has the NW job is false. She may indeed eventually get the job but not before they go through a complete hiring and interview process with several candidates. Obviously, NW is a pretty desirable job.

Stark contrast to the comment from Ray Looze at Indiana.

“Although my alma mater means a great deal to me and I wish that they’re as successful as possible, I’ve been at Indiana 18 years now and I’m excited about where we’re going as a program,” Looze, the 10-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, said. “It’s one of the best programs in the country, presently, and we’ve got unfinished business here. I think the institution and the kids and coaches would really like to bring that national title back – so I’ll be staying here.”

That’s a fairly harsh assessment of a very successful Coach. He’s seemingly done some great things at Northwestern and Boise. What makes him a ‘crock of crap?’ Seems small without explanation.

It’s good to see they’re making speculation out of absolutely nothing.

I mean, there is definitely something here. He has worked under Salo at USC before so it would make sense for him to go back to USC which birthed the rumors that he actually is. That’s not out of nothing.

Again, him saying that he has 3 years left on his contract instead of just ending the rumors outright by saying he’s not moving is absolutely something. It’s weird that he wouldn’t just say that he’s not moving and instead phrases it like how he did.

SC should have better teams. Need better recruiting.. There’s no reason not to recruit at SC. I understand all the money, tuition, scholarship limits, the expense of the city. I am from that area and went there. They have all the money in the world. They just choose not to spend it in swimming now. I would go in another direction than this article states.
