Georgia Snags Verbal from Canadian Distance Star, Olivia Anderson

Olivia Anderson, who lives in Mississauga Canada and trains under Kevin Thorburn at Etobicoke Swimming, announced via Twitter that she had given a verbal commitment to the University of Georgia for 2017-18.

Anderson is a top Canadian distance freestyler, much in the mold of Brittany MacLean, who completed her collegiate eligibility with the Bulldogs last season. Anderson represented Team Canada at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Maui. She won a silver medal in the 1500 free (16:18.66), a bronze in the 800m free (8:32.84), and placed fifth in the 400 free (4:14.20). She wound up the 2015-16 swim season ranked #1 in Canada in the 1500m free, #2 in the 800m free behind MacLean, and #8 in the 400m free.

Her top times are:

  LCM SCY (converted)
1500m free 16:18.66 15:59.47
800m free 8:32.84 9:34.61
400m free 4:14.20 4:44.81
200m free 2:05.46 1:50.14

Anderson’s converted 1650 free time would have placed second at the 2016 SEC Championships behind MacLean, and would have given the Bulldogs a second top-8 finisher in the event at NCAAs. She is joining an absolutely lights-out class of verbally committed Georgia recruits:

Very promising distance swimmer on a steady path of improvement.
For Georgia, the best way to replace Brittany MacLean.

Wow, don’t understand how they can get all these top recruits??? They must have a ton of scholarship $ to use or else several of these girls are only getting a small amount & just really want to be part of a great team & swim at Georgia.

Stanford has been rather quiet this recruiting season so far but after the performance they put on this summer I’m sure some great recruits are on the way

I am not sure if it has to do with the admission process which usually takes time for Stanford. Many recruits end up going somewhere else if they have offers in their hands instead waiting to hear from Stanford. I would figure many recruits probably want to train with Olympians like Ledecky, Manuel and Neal to improve themselves everyday.
