The New Jersey State Interscholstic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) held its annual swimming team tournaments last month, with state champions determined through bracket-style dual meet matchups rather than a standard championship like in other states.
Individual state champions were crowned shortly after at the New Jersey Meet of Champions.
There were eight schools winning state titles across four divisions: Public A, Public B, Public C, and Non-Public for both boys and girls.
PUBLIC A
Girls’ Recap
The Cherry Hill East girls won a nailbiter over Montclair, 85.5-84.5, going 1-3 in the 400 free relay to come from behind and claim the title.

The win for Cherry Hill East is their 13th title in school history.

Cherry Hill East was led by seniors Sarah Cohen and Megan Treglia, who swept their individual events and were members of two winning relays.
Cohen topped the 50 free (24.56) and 100 free (53.02) in new best times, and the re-lowered her 100 free PB in 52.56 leading off the victorious 400 free relay.
Treglia topped the 100 back (58.94) with a new best time and also won the 100 fly (58.20).
The top scorer for Montclair was junior Sophie Zuluaga, who topped the 200 free (1:57.23) and 500 free (5:13.34).
Boys Recap
The Westfield boys won their third straight state title and 29th overall, the most in New Jersey history, picking up a decisive 103-67 victory in the final over Hillsborough.

The title victory came after Westfield dominated Ridegwood in the semis, more than doubling them up by a score of 115-55.
Westfield’s trio of Owen Waibel, Danny Pierce and Dylan Lagrimas swept their individual events to combine for 36 points.
Waibel, a Duke commit, won the 50 free (20.59) and 100 free (45.47), while fellow senior Pierce topped the 100 back (53.09) and 100 fly (50.76).
Lagrimas, a junior, set a best time in winning the 200 IM (1:56.41) and also won the 100 breast (59.38).
Hillsborough junior John Eodice was the top performer for his team, winning the 200 free (1:42.42) and 500 free (4:39.20).
PUBLIC B
Girls Recap
The Chatham girls defended their Public B state title with a 105-65 victory over Mainaldn, extending their dual meet win streak to 24.

The Cougars won all but two events, including juniors Madeline Crawford and Gloria Jeng going two-for-two individually.
Crawford won the 200 free (1:53.22) and 500 free (5:06.90), and Jeng set new best times in winning the 50 free (23.98) and 100 free (53.00).
Another junior, Kiera Harkins, set a new school record in winning the 100 fly (55.73) and was also the runner-up in the 100 back (58.75).
Senior Alviai Wainwright was the top scorer for Mainland, claiming the 100 back (57.06) and posting a best time to place 2nd in the 100 fly (56.48).
Boys Recap
The Chatham boys completed a four-peat with a dominant 106-64 win over Ridge, marking their 56th straight dual meet win. Their last loss came on March 24, 2021, the finale of the COVID-hampered season, meaning their current senior class walks away with a perfect 56-0 record.

Chatham senior Charlie Kulp paved the way for the team’s decisive victory, as the Duke commit topped the 100 free (45.87), 200 free (1:38.88) and 200 IM (1:55.86).
Ridge had three swimmers hit double-digit points with senior Gabriele Beverini and juniors Youssef Elnawawi and Jack Thompson all winning one event and finishing 2nd in another.
Beverini won the 100 fly (50.76), Elnawawi topped the 50 free (21.45) and Thompson paced the 100 back (51.72).
Chatham’s Ryan O’Day was another top performer, finishing as the runner-up in both the 100 back (52.85) and 100 fly (52.09).
PUBLIC C
Girls Recap
The Haddonfield girls ran away with their sixth straight Group C state title, obliterating Governor Livingston by a final score of 118-52.

U.S. Olympic Trials finalist and age group star Audrey Derivaux led the way for Haddonfield with wins in the 100 back (53.29) and 200 IM (1:57.91), with the 100 back swim marking a new lifetime best.
The 15-year-old sophomore also led off Haddonfield’s 200 medley relay in 25.15 on backstroke, and split 49.14 anchoring the 400 free relay.
Joining Derivuax in winning two events were Haddonfield junior Julia McHale and freshman Lia Cottrell.
McHale won the 50 free (24.94) and 100 free (54.32) with a pair of best times, while Cottrell topped the 200 free (1:56.75) and 500 free (5:02.74) while setting a best time in the 100 free (53.45) leading off the 400 free relay.

The Haddonfield boys cruised to their fifth straight state title, scoring 101 points to Mendham’s 69 in the dual meet finale.

Depth was the story of the day for Haddonfield, as only one swimmer, senior Tre Cottrell, scored more than eight points individually.
A Georgetown commit, Cottrell topped the 100 free (46.83) and 100 breast (59.45) while contributing to Haddonfield’s winning 200 medley and 200 free relays.
Mendham was led by seniors Kenneth Barnicle and Martin Castro-Salazar, who combined for 22 points with three wins and one runner-up finish between them.
Barnicle, a Cal commit, won the 50 free (20.73) and 200 IM (1:51.32), while Castro-Salazar set a PB to win the 100 fly (54.90) and was 2nd in the 100 back (55.54).
NON-PUBLIC
Girls Recap
The Our Lady of Mercy girls completed an undefeated season by winning their second state title in school history, topping Immaculatre Heart Academy by a score of 102-68 in the Non-Public final.

The Villagers won five of eight individual events, with freshman Simone McGlinchey and senior Scarlet McGlinchey leading the way with two wins apiece.
Simone won the 50 free (24.02) and 100 back (56.54) in personal best fashion, while Scarlet topped the 100 breast (1:02.82) and 100 fly (55.69).
Immaculate Heart senior Kathleen Turano also had two wins on the day, topping the 200 free (1:54.37) and 500 free (5:03.89).
Boys Recap
The Saint Augustine Prep boys won their third straight title in dominant fashion, more than doubling up Pingry School with a 121-49 final in the Non-Public championship meet.

The Hermits completed a 10-0 season by winning 10 of the 11 events on the schedule, including a relay sweep, to extend their dual meet win streak to 31.
Senior Michael McCarthy, junior Jonah Alvarez and sophomore Christian Shenk all won two individual events on the day to lead Saint Augustine to victory.
McCarthy topped the 200 free (1:43.58) and 500 free (4:33.22), Alvarez led the 100 free (48.92) and 200 IM (1:55.79), and Shenk was victorious in the 100 free (47.67) and 100 back (51.73).
