Behind British swimmer Ben Proud’s eye-popping 21.11 50m free semi-final time here in Glasgow, another speedy competitor turned some heads in the evening competition. Italy’s Andrea Vergani, just 21 years of age, fired off a new Italian National Record of 21.37 en route to capturing the 2nd seed heading into tomorrow’s final.
Vergani has been on a tear as of late, dipping under the 22-second threshold for just the first time this past April. While competing at this year’s Italian Nationals, he registered a winning time of 21.70 to represent the only racer under 22 in the race, beating out veteran Luca Dotto by .36.
With his 21.37 outing this evening, Vergani overtakes the previous Italian NR of 21.64 set by Marco Orsi back in 2014. The young Italian also now checks-in as the 14th fastest performer in history, tying American Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian.
Looking at this season, Vergani now sits as 3rd in the world.

Wasn’t Vergani supposed to go swim NCAA at Cal? https://swimswam.com/third-best-50-yard-freestyler-in-co-2016-vergani-commits-to-cal/
Anyone know what happened to that? The guy just swam fast enough for a high podium at any Olympics ever. Whoa whoa…
