The 2018 CIF-Southern Section psych sheets are out for all four divisions. Diving takes place on Monday and Tuesday, while swimming prelims and finals begin on Wednesday and run through Saturday afternoon. Division I tends to include the largest, mostly public, schools, while Division IV is made up of smaller schools.

The most visible meet is Division I, where Santa Margarita is poised to repeat as girls’ champions with the top seeds in all three relays as well as the 200 IM (Isabelle Odgers), 50 free (Anicka Delgado), 100 free (Ella Ristic), and 100 breast (Odgers). Newport Harbor’s Ayla Spitz leads the qualifiers in the 200 free. She is second seed in the 500 free behind Stephanie Su of Mater Dei. Hannah Farrow of Fountain Valley is top seed in the 100 fly, while Huntington Beach freshman Madelyn Harris comes in with the top 100 back time.

The boys’ meet looks to be closer. Unlike the girls, three different schools lead the qualifiers in the relays: Northwood (200 medley relay), Los Alamitos (200 free relay), and Aliso Niguel (400 free relay). Individually, no one swimmer is top seed in two events. Dana Hills senior Owen Kao is top seed in the 200 free and second behind Tesoro’s Michael Brinegar in the 500 free. Tesoro’s Jonathon Cheng comes in with the only sub-1:50 in the 200 IM. Brandon Toland of Los Alamitos is top seed in the 50 free, while Northwood’s Lou Shawn has the fastest qualifying time in the 100 free. Aliso Niguel’s Aaron Pang leads the 100 fly qualifiers. Santa Margarita’s AJ Rossman is the top seed in the 100 back. And Ryan Schildwachter of Corona del Mar comes in with the top 100 breast time.

I heard she is battling a really serious medical issue, and I know she has been out of the water for a good chunk of time. Wishing her all the best, the girl is a class act and hope she finds her stride soon.
