Women’s 400 Meter Freestyle – Prelims

It was a quick morning at Speedo Juniors, and while no one in the top 8 dropped time to get there, several swimmers who might have been expected to contest the championship final tonight added just enough time in the morning to keep them out. Erica Sullivan of Sandpipers of Nevada led the field with 4:16.04; she came into the meet with the top seed time by 7/10. Magnolia Aquatic Club’s Joy Field qualified seond with 4:16.58, just ahead of La Mirada Armada’s Taylor Ault (4:16.98), who won the 800 free on Day 1. 14-year-old Madelyn Donohoe came within 1 second of her seed time to qualify fourth for tonight’s final.

There were a couple of time drops that moved swimmers into the B final: Chase Travis of North Baltimore (-1.39), Mckenzee Gordon of Scottsdale Aquatic Club (-1.09), Nicole Fye of The Fish (-.86), and Ryley Ober of Sarasota Tsunami (-.44).

The swim of the morning came from Fynn Minuth, a rising sophomore at University of South Carolina, who destroyed his previous PB of 4:02 with a 3:54.30. It was the fastest time of the morning by over 3 seconds. Drew Kibler of Carmel Swim Club qualified second in 3:57.74; his 1.13-second time drop moved him from #84 to #51 on the all-time list for 15-16 boys. Johannes Calloni, who set the meet record in the 1500m free on Day 1, was third through to finals with 3:58.56.

The other big drop of the prelims session belonged to Justin Grender of Cincinnati Marlins; he dropped 3.1 seconds to make the B final, having been seeded 58th.

Fort Collins Area Swim Team’s Coleen Gillilan rocked a 59.95 to lead the qualifiers for the women’s 100 fly final with the only sub-1:00 in the field. Gillilan dropped .77 with her swim and rocketed from 53rd to 25th on the all-time list for 15-16 girls. Riptide Swim Team’s Regan Smith also improved on her seed time; she dropped 6/10 to make it back second for tonight’s final. Smith moves from #21 to #12 on the all-time list for 13-14 girls.

Dakota Luther of Austin Swim Club, who won the 200 fly on Day 1, qualified third in 1:00.71, just ahead of Brea Aquatics’ Alexis Margett.

Men’s 100 Meter Butterfly – Prelims

The top 3 seeds in the men’s 100 fly qualified in order for finals, each less than a second off his seed time. Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club led the field with 53.20; he was followed by Camden Murphy of Kingfish Aquatic Club (54.45) and Dayton Raiders’ Cody Bybee (54.52). North Carolina Aquatic Club’s Will Macmillan, who won the 200 fly on Day 1, dropped .2 and tied Bybee for third.

Van Mathias of Multnomah Aquatic Club took nearly a full second off his seed time to leapfrog into the A final, having come into the meet seeded 20th. Zachary Cook of Greenfield Community Aquatic Team improved by .77 to make the B final with 55.52.
