Division II Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

Women’s Awards:

Female Swimmer of the Meet: Patri Castro Ortega, Queens University of Charlotte – For the second year in a row, Castro Ortega earned Swimmer of the Meet honors. After breaking NCAA Division II records in every event she swam last year, she repeated that feat again in 2016. Castro Ortega’s individual records this year included the 200 IM (1:55.63), 400 IM (4:08.56), 500 free (4:39.28), 100 free (48.54).

Female Diver of the Meet: Monica Amaral, University of West Florida – Amaral won both diving events at the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships. She scored 550.20 to win the 3-meter event on Day 1 and 494.90 points to win the 1-meter board on Day 3.

Women’s Diving Coach of the Year: Barbara Parker, University of West Florida – By winning both diving events, West Florida earned an extra 40 points and finished sixth overall in the women’s team standings.

Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year: Kirk Sanocki, Wingate University – Wingate was runner-up to Queens in team standings, with impressive performances that included winning the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay, 200 back, 100 fly, and 200 fly. The Bulldogs set NCAA Division II records in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay, and Sofia Petrenko broke the mark in the 200 fly.

Men’s Awards:

Male Swimmer of the Meet: Dion Dreesens, Queens University of Charlotte – Dreesens won the 1000 free, 200 free, and 500 free, setting NCAA Division II records in the 200 and 500, and he placed third in the 100 free. He was also a member of Queens’ record-setting 800 free relay.

Male Diver of the Meet: Collin Vest, Clarion – Vest won Diver of the Meet honors for the second year in a row, after winning the 2016 3-meter event and finishing second in 1-meter diving.

Men’s Diving Coach of the Year: Steve Burciaga, Grand Valley State University – With 2 A and 2 B finalists in each of the diving events, Grand Valley’s diving team earned 84 of the Lakers’ 233.5 total team points, which translated into a seventh-place finish overall.

Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year: Mike Blum, Florida Southern College – The Moccasins took third place in the team standings with dominant swims that included wins in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.
