There are 5 Futures Championships going on around the country this week, including a Huntsville site at the Huntsville Aquatics Center. The first day of the meet featured the 200 free, 100 breast, and 200 fly, as well as the women’s 800 free and men’s 1500 free.
Sarasota Sharks 17-year-old Sienna Angove won the women’s 200 free with a huge swim of 1:59.96. Angove, who is originally from Canada, is an Ohio State recruit who is set to join the Buckeyes this fall. She holds a career best of 1:58.53 in the event, a time which she swam at the Canadian Trials in April.
The men’s 200 free saw Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club 17-year-old Ethan Ekk and Laker Swim 17-year-old Ryan Erisman battle it out. Ekk was out ahead of Erisman, splitting 25.82 on the opening 50 to Erisman’s 26.25. Ekk would flip at the 100m turn in 53.77, still ahead of Erisman, who flipped in 54.08. Erisman made his move on the 3rd 50, splitting 28.15 to Ekk’s 28.43, which cut Ekk’s lead down to just 0.03 seconds at the 150m turn. Ekk managed to pull it out, coming home in 27.30 to Erisman’s 27.34, which earned him the win in 1:49.50, while Erisman was right behind in 1:49.57. For Erisman, it was a massive swim, blowing away his previous best of 1:50.64, which he swam at the US Olympic Trials last month. Ekk, meanwhile, was just off his career best of 1:49.15, which he, like Angove, swam at the Canadian Trials in April.
Carmel Swim Club 14-year-old Ellie Clarke had a huge swim to win the women’s 200 fly decisively. Clarke, who entered the meet with a career best of 2:20.52, won the race in 2:13.82 in finals. It was a spectacular performance for the youngster, blowing right by the Summer Junior Nationals cut of 2:16.99. She also hit the Summer Nationals cut of 2:14.59. Clarke is 2nd in the nation this season among 14-year-old girls.
In the women’s 800 free, Sarasota Sharks 19-year-old Michaela Mattes won with an 8:44.43, finishing 1st by a very big margin. Mattes, who swims collegiately for Florida, was off her career best of 8:35.58, which she swam in April of 2022.
Swim Atlanta 18-year-old Katie Christopherson won the women’s 100 breast in 1:10.44. Christopherson, who will be starting her collegiate career at Virginia in the fall, holds a career best of 1:08.39, which she swam back in the summer of 2022.
In the men’s 100 breast, Kentucky’s JT Broome won in a time of 1:02.89. It was an excellent swim for the rising Wildcat junior, clearing his previous best of 1:04.08, which he swam last summer. Kentucky picked up another win when rising sophomore Josh Fujimoto clocked a 15:55.74 to win the men’s 1500 free. The race was a big career best for Fujimoto, taking a little over 13 seconds off his previous best of 16:09.05, which he swam at the Indy Cup in May.
Swim Fort Lauderdale 18-year-old Thomas Powers-Hammond took the men’s 200 fly in 2:01.12, marking yet another huge personal best. He entered the meet with a personal best of 2:05.03, which he swam last month.
