Portland, Oregon native Hazel Derr has made a verbal commitment to the University of California, Santa Barbara where she will be a second-generation Gaucho beginning in the fall of 2022.

Derr is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Jefferson High School and Portland Aquatic Club. She is a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 100/200 back and a Futures qualifier in the 200 IM. As a sophomore, she placed 3rd in the 100 back (56.03) and 8th in the 100 free (53.12) at the 2020 Oregon 6A State Swimming and Diving Championships.
In March, Derr improved her PBs in the SCY 50 free, 200 back, and 200 IM swimming at Four Corners Sectionals in Arizona. She finaled in the 100 back (11th), 200 back (4th), and 200 IM (25th). At the end of April, she competed at TYR Spring Cup in Des Moines and notched PBs in the 200m free (2:14.41) and 200m back (2:19.17).

- 200 IM – 2:06.53
- 400 IM – 4:34.76
Derr’s best times would have scored in the top 8 of the 100 back and 200 back at the 2021 MPSF Championships, where the Gauchos finished 4th out of 7 teams. Alyssa Lund, Isabella Urlando, Nina Statler, Olivia Hovorka, and Samantha Banos have also made verbal commitments to UCSB for 2022-23.
