Day 1 Highlights

The 2021 German Short Course Championships kicked off today in Wuppertal, with 21-year-old Lucas Matzerath snagging the 100m breaststroke title.

Stopping the clock in a time of 59.12, the SG Frankfurt swimmer got the edge over Philipp Brandt who touched in 59.39 while Yannis Hein rounded out the top 3 in a mark of 59.52.

Post-race, Matzerath said of his gold medal, “With a victory like that, the new season really starts off really well. And after almost two years without short course competitions, a personal best was somehow to be expected.”

Entering this meet, Matzerath’s PB rested at the 59.21 registered in 2019, so the man sliced .09 0ff of that previous outing.

The women’s 200m fly saw Kathrin Demler get it done for gold in 2:09.73 while Sven Schwarz cleared the field in the men’s 1500m free in a time of 14:52.63.

As for 19-year-olds Schwarz, the freestyle ace points to countryman Florian Wellbrock‘s double medal-winning performance in Tokyo where he took 10k open water gold and 1500m pool bronze. Schwarz, who missed out on Olympic qualification due to a coronavirus infection, said, “Wellbrock’s Olympic victory inspired us all and of course motivates us for upcoming competitions.”
