Franziska Hentke swam to the top of the world ranking in 2:06,18. Youngster Julia Mrozinski showed her real potential, she finished second in 2:10,99 after an unsatisfying result in prelims.
Martina van Berkel, who trains in Germany but starts for Switzerland internationally, grabbed silver in 2:09,57.
Jadé Foelske, who lives in Atlanta with her family and trains at the Dynamo Swim Club, was the youngest swimmer in the final, born 2001. She set a new personal best time in 2:15,86. Jadé participated in the German Junior Championships two weeks ago and finished 4th in her age group, with her perfomance today, she would have won the gold medal in her age group.

Very good time, new world leading time, but like in 2014, 2015 and 2016, isn’t it too early?
Last year she won at German nationals in 2.05.77 in May. And at olympic games she’s eliminated in semifinals in 2.07.67.
In 2015 she swam 2.05.26 in early July, the best time of the year. And then finished 5th at worlds one month later in 2.06.78.
In 2014 she swam 2.07.67 at German nationals in May and finished 6th at European championships in August in 2.08.93.
Some will say that her problem is more a mental problem. Maybe she swims her best performances when she’s well ahead in clear water at home and struggles to handle the pressure… Read more »
I definitely agree that she disappointed at 2014 european championships, 2015 worlds and 2016 olympics, never performing at her best. The last time she really performed at her best at a major international long course event was in 2013 at the world championships. Strangely enough, she had very good results at short-course championships and didnt really seem to feel the pressure there. I definitely dont think that its too early, otherwise you would have to say the same about pretty much every swimmer in the world who set a PB this season already … right? Yes. Mireia is a beast. I was so happy for her when she won that deserved olympic gold in Rio.
And she’s again my first pick for the 200 fly gold in Budapest.
I think Mireia will have a fight on her hands with Hasegawa. I remember several years ago when Hasegawa was going a 2:10 at age 13 that you said you didn’t take much stock in the performances of young Japanese swimmers, but she’s only been getting faster, and she’s only 17 now and going 2:06 at in-season meets.
