USA Swimming Releases The 2014 Junior National Championships Psych Sheet

USA Swimming has released the psych sheet for the 2014 Junior National Championships. The meet runs from July 30th to August 3 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex in Irvine, California.

Several elite swimmers are entered to swim at junior nationals, although some notable junior swimmers are not entered, as they will most likely only be swimming senior nationals. Simone Manuel and Katie Ledecky will not be at junior nationals.

Caeleb Dressel and Andrew Seliskar are only entered in one event, the 50 freestyle.

Carmel Swim Club’s Amy Bilquist has the top seed in three of her four events with a 1:01.44 in the 100 back, 25.32 in the 50 freestyle, and 55.59 in the 100 freestyle. Her 100 freestyle time is almost a second faster than the next fastest entered swimmer.

Jacob Molacek is seeded top 10 in four of his six individual events, with the top seed in the men’s 100 breaststroke.

The only profressional swimmer eligible for the meet is Michael Andrew. He is entered in 11 different events; everything except the 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle, and 1500 freestyle. Your guess will be just as good as mine as to what events he will narrow it down to. He is seeded top 10 in over half of the races and has almost every National Age Group Record from the 13-14 age group. I wouldn’t be surprised if he swims at Junior Natioals as well as US Nationals the following week.

Erin Earley has the fifth fastest time in the country this year in the women’s 200 backstroke. The 15 year-old was picked 6th in our 200 backstroke nationals preview. She is two seconds faster than the second seeded swimmer. Her coaches tell us that she will be swimming at Junior Nationals all week and then staying in Irvine for this race at senior nationals.

Amazing Reece Whitley has the fastest entry time in the 200 Breast at only 14.

Interesting to see that Townley Haas is entered in the 50-800 free events. He’s got a shot at some international teams on the senior level.

I like how the top seed for the women’s and the men’s 200 breaststrokes are both only 14 years old. Even though Emma Cain is British, that’s still a really impressive feat for someone that young. Reminds me of Amanda Beard or Jilen Siroky.
Whitley’s going to be on fire if he can hit his taper.

off topic but now 13 year old Vinny Marciano is swimming fast again.
1:01.5 in 100 fly and 2:12 in 200 back

Not to mention Destin Lasco, still 12, 2:15 in 200 IM and 56.2 in 100 free.

Destin Lasco is my favorite US age group boy swimmer of the moment so I watch him develop closely. I looooooooove his technique. 🙂
Not lucky on day 1.
He destroyed his PB in the 200 IM in 2.15.79 and missed the old 11/12 NAG record of Chas Morton back in 1983 by 0.37s!
Already last month he just missed the 200 back NAG record by 0.08s! 😡
I think he will take his revenge this week and will smash the backstroke NAG records.
Great 100 free as well in 56.29. I like the splits. 27.56/28.73
Huge talent.

Apart from Middle Atlantic LC junior olympics, here are other US meets this week with NAG records in jeopardy.
Pacific Northwest Swimming LC championships with Ethan Dang on breaststroke.

Connecticut LC age group championships with Meghan Lynch on breaststroke and Alexandra Walsh on backstroke.

Minnesota LCM state championships with Regan Smith on backstroke

Walsh is swimming at Juniors as well! She’s 90th in the 200 breast and 100th in the 200 back. Youngest swimmer in the meet, if I’m not mistaken.

no offense but 101.5 and 2:13 really isn’t that fast, does that even make the top 10 for 13 year olds?

Yes. Both of those times would make the top 10 fastest 13 AND 14 year old swims ever. http://www.usaswimming.org/_Rainbow/Documents/324c9867-90f3-4cdb-b197-042feb1974a8/girls_1314_lcm.pdf

Bios prediction of the meet: Blair Bish from Arkansas will win the men’s 100 breast. I’ve watched him swim in the past and he’s got so much speed that people will have to work to keep up with him.

I’ve raced blair at sectionals and he went 1/04.1. And he has lots of talent. Probably going to be top8 at juniors but winning is a long shot. If he swims well he’ll be 1:02 mid to high. But not enough to beat molacek or whiteley

A little remark.
Emma Cain is British, Taylor Ruck is Canadian, Easop Lee is Singaporean, Daria Talanova is Kyrgyzstani, Cam Jones is Australian.
All can win a race next week at these US juniors.
I never understand why foreign swimmers are allowed to swim at national championships.
Sometimes at French championships, the first french swimmer is third in a race and he’s national champion. But it’s weird to see a national champion in third place. How main stream people in the stands can understand that?
And why in USA is it allowed in juniors and not at Nationals?

bobo – my guess about the juniors/Nationals difference in rules is that juniors is not as much of a selection meet like Nationals is. For those teams where Nationals is THE selection meet, I think the preference is to keep it Americans only, so everybody knows where they’re sitting for qualifications.

Will 14-year-old Madison Homovich continue to follow in the footsteps of Katie Ledecky?
She’s in Ledecky mode since last year.
And Katie swam 4.10/8.36/16.24 at US juniors in 2011.
Good goal times for her.

Can Michael Andrew win his first American title?
The 100 back and the 200 IM represent his best chances.

Homovich can hit 4:10, she’s lights out in taper and she was a PB of 4:16.0 at Charlotte Grand Prix in May. 8:36 is probably doable as well, did her 8:48 in Charlotte as well. The 1500 is the hardest though, she was 16:46 in late June, hard to drop 22 seconds in a little over a month. But she’s got the ability for sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if (Bobo bold prediction time) she’s fighting for team spots in 2016 in 400/800.
