BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s swimming and diving team demonstrated their depth as they defeated visiting Towson, 157-141 at the UMBC Aquatic Complex to earn their first win in dual meet competition of the season.
Six different Retrievers earned gold for the Retrievers, while UMBC recorded another dozen second place finishes in the pool and in the well.
NOTABLE
· UMBC took the first three places in 1000 freestyle. Senior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) won it in 9:30.19, followed by senior Samuel Jyawook (Franklin, Tenn.) and senior Mac Hoskins (Columbia, Md./Mt. St. Joseph’s).
· Junior Niklas Weigelt (Clayton, Calif.) took the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:41.66.
· Sophomore Daniel Nicusen (Santana de Mures, Romania) won the 100 yard breaststroke, touching first in 57.44.
· The Retrievers captured the top three spots in the 200 butterfly, led by a senior Matthew Bennici (Walkersville, Md.) first place effort (1:52.44).
· Junior diver Will Henrickson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) placed second on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, falling .75 points short (262.05) on the 3-meter board.
· Senior Luka Zuric (Setauket, N.Y.0 won the 200 backstroke by more than two seconds.
· Jyawook and Wisner reversed the 1-2 order in the 500 freestyle, with Jyawook winning in 4:39.49.
UMBC completes its four meets in four weeks stretch when they host VMI on Saturday, Nov. 13. The meet always gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
BALTIMORE – In a thrilling meet between local rivals, the UMBC women’s swimming and diving teams edged Towson, 151-148 at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
Senior Caroline Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.) led the way with three victories, including a razor close triumph in the penultimate event, the 200 yard individual medley.
Sophomore Makaela Hill (Catonsville, Md.) also excelled for the Retrievers, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and rallying to earn the 400 freestyle relay team four crucial points and a second place finish in the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay.
The Tigers had won seven consecutive meets versus the Retrievers since a UMBC win in 2006.
NOTABLE
- The Retrievers won the opening 200 yard medley relay, as Sargent, junior Jenna Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales), junior Sierra Tosten (Hagerstown, Md.) and Hill posted a mark of 1:46.36.
- Sargent won the 100 backstroke (58.35), which started a run of seven consecutive events taken by the hosts. Gwinn captured the 100 breaststroke (1:06.12), senior Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) placed first in the 200 butterfly (2:07.85), and Hill won the 50 freestyle (24.52) before the break and the 100 free (53.52) just after it. Then Sargent (200 backstroke- 1:51.48) and Gwinn (200 breaststroke- 2:22.19) capped the run with their second victories of the day.
- Tosten swam a brilliant race and edged her Maddie Mince of Towson by .01 seconds to win the 100 butterfly in 58.11.
- Sargent duplicated Tosten’s effort, narrowly holding off Meagan Clark by .27 seconds and take the 200 IM in 2:10.25.
- Hill swam a last 100 yards in 52.17 to pass one Towson quartet and provide a four-point swing in the 400 free relay

CATONSVILLE, Md. — It was a close showdown between cross-county foes, but the Towson University men’s swimming and diving team was edged 157-141 Saturday afternoon at UMBC Aquatic Center against the host UMBC Retrievers.
Towson (1-3) got a three-win day from Catonsville native Brian Benzing, who won the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. Ajani Dorner picked up two victories in the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
How it Happened
- The Tigers picked up the first win of the day in the 200-yard medley relay, led by Evan Bota, Brian Benzing, Trey Adkins and Ryan Baldino. The group finished in 1 minute, 31.40 seconds.
- Two events later, Michael Fazio finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:43.28, three-hundredths of a second ahead of third place. Luke Schwar took fourth in 1:44.75.
- Towson went one-two in the 100-yard back, paced by a 51.51 from Bota while Nick McClure finished in 53.23. Noah Diacumakos took a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 58.30.
- In the 50-yard freestyle, Brian Benzing won the sprint with a 21.07, winning by two-tenths of a second. Baldino finished third with a 21.29. Likewise, Ajani Dorner won the 1-meter diving event, scoring a 274.84.
- Fazio added a win at 100-yards in the freestyle, winning by over half a second in 46.05. Reed Sells picked up third-place points in the 200-yard back with a time of 1:53.74, followed by a fourth-place finish from Patrick Flint (1:54.24).
- Sells added more third-place points in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:53.74 while Benzing picked up another win in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning in 2:03.28, a victory of nearly eight full seconds. Tanner Fatta took third in 2:11.33.
- Ryan Bookstein tacked on a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:45.92, followed by a 100-yard butterfly win from McClure, who touched in 50.90. Baldino finished fourth in 52.20.
- Dorner swept the boards, winning the 3-meter dive with a 262.80.
- Benzing tripled on the day with a victory in the 200-yard IM, winning by nearly three seconds with a 1:53.29.
- In the day’s final event, Towson won the second relay, taking the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:03.33, winning by four seconds with Baldino, Adkins, Schwar and Fazio.

- The Tigers are idle next week before heading to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for the annual Bucknell Invitational.
- Action kicks off at the Kinney Natatorium on Friday, Nov. 19 and runs until Sunday, Nov. 21.

Towson (2-3) picked up sweeps on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, including a Zone Qualifying score from Christina Coleman. Freshman Bridget Thomas collected the first wins of her rookie season in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
How it Happened
- Towson led off the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking a 1 minute, 47.95 seconds, just a second and a half back from UMBC’s time of 1:46.36.
- Meagan Clark continued her strong run in the distance events, taking the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:25.62, winning by nearly half a minute. She was the lone Tiger swimming the event among three qualifying Retrievers.
- Thomas collected her first collegiate victory in the 200-yard freestyle, winning by just over one-tenth of a second with a 1:57.13 over UMBC’s Roaa Farag (1:57.28). Katie Nunez took important third-place points with a 1:57.79. Parker Schulz added more points in the 100-yard backstroke, taking second with a 59.02, improving her season best by over half a second.
- Likewise, Tiffany Matulis finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:07.29 while Karlee Carminati and Samantha Casolo took second and third in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:08.06 and 2:08.55, respectively. Maddie Frick picked up a fourth-place finish with a 2:10.27.
- In the first sprint of the day, Maddie Mince took second with a 24.76, followed by Ava Enriquez at 25.09.
- Towson swept the 1-meter diving event, topped by Christina Coleman’s 269.32, qualifying for the NCAA Zone Diving for the third time. Teammate Alyssa Largay took second in the event with a 257.62 while Sarah DiGaetano finished third with a 254.32.
- In the second sprint, Nunez and Hailey Ritter finished second and third, with Nunez touching in 53.84 while Ritter finished in 54.15.
- Schulz and Frick continued Towson’s second-third pattern in the 200-yard backstroke, with Schulz going for a 2:08.76 while Frick finished in 2:09.74.
- Clark finished second in the 200-yard breast with a 2:27.38, followed by Thomas’s second victory of the day, winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:11.78. Teammate Suzannah Mills finished three seconds later in 5:14.84.
- Mince and Enriquez took another second-and-third place finish at 58.12 and 58.13 in the 100-yard fly.
- It was another one-two-three for the Towson diving squad as Largay won the 3-meter event with a 259.57. Coleman finished second at 245.32 while freshman Abby O’Leary notched a 227.02.
- Clark and Carminati paired for second and third place finishes in the 200-yard IM, the former going in 2:10.52 while the latter finished half a second later with a 2:11.10.
- In the final event of the day, the Tigers picked up a key win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Enriquez, Nunez, Mince and Schulz winning in 3:32.61. Towson’s second squad of Victoria Dichak, Ritter, Thomas and Mills took third in 3:37.83.
