Drew Edson knew he had a bunch of fast swimmers, but that in his mind isn’t what made his Detroit U-D Jesuit boys team so special this year.
“It was the culture,” said Edson, who just completed his ninth season as head coach at U-D Jesuit. “It was the way they treated each other and the way they’ve built this team off of the things that really mattered. The fast swimming has come after that.”
U-D Jesuit was so fast that it did something never done before in school history.
For the first time, U-D Jesuit is a state champion in swimming after capturing the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 Boys Swimming & Diving meet at Oakland University on March 15.
U-D Jesuit won the meet with 305 points, a comfortable margin over second-place Byron Center’s total of 256.5.
Division 2 is the middle classification in Michigan of the three Divisions in terms of school enrollment.
The Cubs had three individual winners, those being senior Evan Tack, sophomore Charlie McCuiston and senior Patrick MacKillop.
Tack won the 200 individual medley in a personal best and meet record time of 1:46.28, breaking the old mark of 1:46.51 set last year by Gus MacDonald. McCuiston won the 100 freestyle in a personal best time of 45.45 and Mackillop captured the 100 breaststroke in a personal best time of 54.88.
U-D Jesuit also won the 400 free relay in a meet-record time of 3:03.68 behind the team of Tack, freshman Jack McCuiston, senior Matt Garza and Charlie McCuiston.
“It just means the world,” Mackilop said. “It’s such a good culture. It’s the greatest feeling ever and I wouldn’t want to do it with another group of guys.”
There were two individual stars of the meet, those being Stoney Creek senior Will Cicco and Birmingham Seaholm junior Elliot Rijnovean.
Cicco, who will swim in college for Brown, won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:37.36 and the 500 free in a time of 4:28.36.
Rijnovean, an Indiana commit, won the 100 butterfly in a time of 47.85 and the 100 backstroke in a time of 47.10, which was an overall state record.
He broke the old record set by Cameron Craig of Monroe back in 2016. Both of Rijnovean’s victories were in personal best times and also repeat titles after winning those events last year.
“I just locked in,” Rijnovean said. “Everything was on the line and I managed to pull through. That was my thought process throughout the whole thing.”
Rijnovean also swam the lead-off leg for Seaholm’s team that won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:30.09. His 50 backstroke leg was a personal best time of 21.71. Other team members were junior Finn Murray, senior Emmett Knudsen and sophomore Quinn O’Neill.
Utica Ford II senior Maximus Dexter won the 50 free in a time of 20.75 and Portage Northern junior William Blind won the diving event with 508.90 points.
Farmington’s team of senior Luke Morden, junior Josh Luo, senior Paul DeMartini and senior Jack Tomlinson won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:24.04.
