Thomas Heilman Swims 50.80 100 Fly, Breaks Michael Phelps’ National Age Group Record

2024 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

In the finals of the men’s 100 butterfly at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials, 17-year-old Thomas Heilman clocked a time of 50.80 to finish second, qualifying for the Paris Olympic team in his second individual event after the 200 fly. He broke Michael Phelps‘ 17-18 U.S. National Age Group record, which was a time of 51.10 clocked back at the 2003 World Championships.

Heilman out-touched Dare Rose by 0.04 seconds largely because of his finish, as to the naked eye, it appeared as if Rose got to the wall before him.

In addition, 18-year-old Kaii Winkler also rose up the 17-18 rankings, becoming the third-fastest performer of all-time in the age group after finishing eighth in the final with a time of 51.51.

All-Time U.S. 17-18 Boys’ Age Group Rankings, 100-Meter Butterfly (LCM):

  1. Thomas Heilman — 50.80 (2024)
  2. Michael Phelps — 51.10 (2003)
  3. Kaii Winkler — 51.51 (2024)
  4. Luca Urlando — 52.04 (2019)
  5. Ian Crocker — 52.25 (2001)

Heading into this meet, Heilman had a best time of 51.19, clocked at U.S. Nationals last season. That time currently stands as the U.S. 15-16 NAG. Meanwhile, Winkler’s pre-meet personal best was 52.13.

Split Comparison:

Thomas Heilman, 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Thomas Heilman, 2023 U.S. Nationals Michael Phelps, 2003 World Championships
50m 24.23 24.05 24.61
100m 26.57 27.15 26.49
Total 50.80 51.19 51.10

Compared to his previous best, Heilman was slower on his front half, but faster on his back half. But compared to Phelps’ old NAG, his front half was faster but his back half was slower.

credit to his coach as well for finding his perfect taper plan leading up to trials… so hard to get it “just right”

Looking back on this after yesterday this rly felt like a clutch swim for Thomas. Something about him being able to just get his hand on the wall ahead of almost everyone and out touch for the spot. Felt similar to phelps 7th race in the sense no one was sure he was going to take it and then he just did. Let’s just say this was a very consequential race and has almost certainly just put Blake Pieroni on the Olympic team after tonight. Congrats Tommy!

Heilman channeling Phelps’ magic final touch at the wall.

Must be heartbreaking for World Championship bronze medalist to miss out by 0.04s

Breaking an 18&U Phelps NAG at age 17 (by .30 in a 100) is nuts.

I mean, you can also say 100 fly is not Heilman’s best event.

Heilman’s 15-16 NAG in the 200 fly is also faster than Phelps’ old 17-18 NAG so

Heilman is not much of a sprint guy either and that’s why experts keep saying “he’s more of a 2 fly guy”.

The future of US butterfly is bright. Any chance Heilman switches to Texas and to Bowman?

No chance. His brother goes to UVA, his mom teaches at UVA, and his club coach just joined the staff at UVA.

Y’all need to give this shit up. Wishful thinking on your part, and that’s all. Heilman is a Hoo, through and through. He’s a butterflyer, about to be coached by the man who just coached Gretchen Walsh to a world record in the 100 butterfly. He does not need Bowman to continue his ascent.
