Third meet record for Meilutyte at Gymnasiade, Italians impress

Lithuanian star Ruta Meilutyte continued to add to her record count at the Gymnasiade, winning the 100 free and shattering the meet record after doing the same in the 50 free and 50 breast.

Meilutyte survived a tough test from Great Britain’s Grace Vertigans on her way to a win in 55.22. Vertigans was 55.93. Meilutyte has had an eventful meet thus far, winning three events but hitting adversity in her best stroke, breaststroke. She scratched the 100 with an illness and was DQ’d in prelims of the 200.

Four more events were contested on day 4 of the meet in Brasilia, Brazil, with the young Italian squad winning three of them, including a 1-2 finish in the 100 free. Alessandro Bori and Nicholangelo Di Fabio were both sub-51 in the 100 with Bori winning the race. Simone Sabbioni won the boys 50 back and Claudia Tarzia added a win for the Italian women in the 200 fly. This is the second straight generation that Italy has shown a strong crop of young swimmers, perhaps signaling the rise of yet another international contender in a sport where young talent has really begun to spread out across the globe.
