Teong Tzen Wei Ties Day-Old Singaporean, Asian Record In Men’s 50 Fly

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

While competing on day two of the 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships, Singapore’s Teong Tzen Wei tied his day-old national and Asian Record in the men’s 50m butterfly.

Hitting the wall in a time of 22.01, Teong wound up in 4th place in tonight’s 50m fly final, a race which saw Brazilian Nicholas Santos once again become the oldest world champion in history at age 42.

Santos topped the podium in 21.78 while Noe Ponti of Switzerland secured silver (21.96) and Hungary’s Szebasztian Szabo earned bronze (21.98).

Entering this meet, Teong held the Singaporean standard in 22.24, a time he posted at the 2021 Singaporean National Championships. He dropped that down to the 22.01 record-setting time in the heats in Melbourne before adding slightly in yesterday’s semi-final with a mark of 22.18.

Only one Asian swimmer has ever medaled in this event in long course or short course at the World Championships. Zhang Qiang of China won a silver medal in the first year it was offered at the short course championships in 1999.

Singapore has never medaled at a World Short Course Swimming Championships.
