Swimming Canada Reacts to FINA World Championships Announcement

Earlier today, FINA announced that it would be adding a 2022 World Championships into the summer calendar. SwimSwam reported that Budapest, Hungary would be hosting the Championships, planned to take place from June 18 through July 3, 2022. These Championships will be in place of the World Championships originally scheduled to take place in Fukuoka, Japan this summer as well. Fukuoka will now host the Championships in 2023.

Swimming Canada is not the first to have announced a reaction to the change as British Swimming reacted earlier today.

The summer swimming calendar is getting busier and busier as there are many major events occurring such as the ISL, Commonwealth Games, the European Championships, and now the World Championships.

Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi reacted Monday.

“After the recent postponement of the 2022 FINA World Championships previously scheduled for Fukuoka, Japan, FINA has now informed us of a new agreement with the city of Budapest,” El-Awadi said. “This will give aquatic athletes around the world a global championships to work towards this summer. Swimming Canada will continue to be adaptable and make plans to ensure the best possible team represents our country at these championships, as well as at the subsequent Commonwealth Games.”

“It gives a major event for our open water athletes to focus toward in 2022, and for the pool team athletes we will look to attend as we had planned when Fukuoka was scheduled for May 2022”

El-Awadi also stated that the Canadian Trials, scheduled for April 5-10 will continue as planned. Those Trials will select and nominate the swimmers that will be members of both the World Championships and Commonwealth teams.

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place about a month after the World Championships as the Commonwealth Games are to take place from July 28 through August 8.

See the summer calendar below:

  • June 26th – July 3rd – 2022 World Championships
  • July 29th – August 8th – 2022 Commonwealth Games
  • August 11th – August 17th – 2022 European Championships

SwimSwam will continue to update as other reactions are shared.

At the WCs, pool swimming starts always in the second week.

This year: 26th June ———> 3rd July
