This morning in the prelims of the 100 free at the 2017 NCAA DI Women’s National Championships, Stanford’s Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel put up the third-fastest swim in history with 46.30. She will be the top qualifier going into tonight, after coming in half a second ahead of the field.

Georgia senior Olivia Smoliga was second with 46.87, followed by Louisville’s 200 national champion Mallory Comerford with 46.89.
With that swim, Comerford becomes the ninth-fastest performer in history.

Simone is angry. That’s her baby event and she wants that 45 too. But more important the win.
But she has a great competition. Abbey is not at her best but Olivia and especially Mallory are on fire. Based on her 200 free progression since ACCs a time around 46 low looks very plausible for the Louisville girl.
Great fight in perspective. I can’t imagine Simone losing but….
