Poland’s Ksawery Masiuk Scratches Euro Jrs 100 Fly Semi To Favour 50 Backstroke

2021 EUROPEAN JUNIOR SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ksawery Masiuk of Poland had a busy morning on day 3 of the 2021 European Junior Swimming Championships. He swam both the 100 butterfly and 50 backstroke prelims and qualified for both semi-finals. Masiuk decided to scratch from the 100 butterfly semi for which he qualified in a tie for 5th place with Hungary’s Bence Peto (53.92). The swim for Masiuk was a bit off his PB in the event which sits at a 52.69 from April 2021.

The decision to drop the 100 fly was likely due to the fact that he will be swimming the 50 backstroke semi-final as top seed just a few events later. Masiuk hit a 25.28 in the 50 backstroke heats with is just over the 25.05 PB he posted at the 2021 European Championships earlier this year. Masiuk will swim from lane 4 in the second semi and will likely be going up against the likes of Aleksei Tkachev (25.59), Cornelius Jahn (25.84), and Oliver Nell (25.88), among others in the final.

Masiuk already has one gold medal to his name at this meet, having delivered a 53.98 in the final to beat Ukrainian Oleksandr Zheltyakov (53.98) and Tkachev (54.34) who collected silver and bronze. Notably, 100 backstroke silver medalist Zheltyakov scratched from the 50 back semi-finals after qualifying 14th in the heats with a 26.29.
