Nicholas Lia Hits 22.27 Norwegian Record In 50 Freestyle, Just Misses FINA A

BERGEN SWIM FESTIVAL 2021

On the third and final day of the 2021 Bergen Swim Festival, Nicholas Lia notched a new Norwegian record in the men’s 50 freestyle with a 22.27 to undercut Niksja Stojkovski‘s mark of 22.30 from 2019.

Lia broke the record swimming alongside Stojkovski who posted a 22.64 in the heat for silver while Markus Lie hit a 22.98 for bronze. That trio of Norwegian men recently represented Norway at the 2021 European Swimming Championships in the 50 free and finished in the same order. There, Lia was a 22.37 for 23rd place, Stojkovski a 22.71 for 35th, and Lie a 23.06 for 48th. All three of them were a bit over the Olympic qualifying time in the event which is a 22.01.

Tomoe Hvas closed out the 2021 Bergen Swim Festival with a 52.99 100 butterfly to take gold and get within a second of his own 52.46 Norwegian record which he set at the 2019 version of this meet.

That swim for Hvas was a little bit slower than the current FINA A standard and Olympic qualifying time of 51.96. Hvas hit the FINA A yesterday in the 200 IM with a 1:59.44 which should be enough to add his name to the Norwegian Olympic roster in the event.

Hvas won the event by more than a second as Markus Lie followed him with a 54.39 for silver and Halvor Arne Borgstrøm touched in 55.39 for bronze.

In the women’s 100 fly, Marthe Willumsen won gold in the senior age category with a 1:02.65 while Helene Lorentz touched first among juniors with a 1:01.15. Lorentz was a few seconds over the Norwegian record of 56.96 held by Ingvild Snildal.

Ingeborg Løyning collected gold in the women’s 200 backstroke with a 2:14.74 which trails her Norwegian record of 2:13.25 from the 2019 World Championships. Løyning recently swam a 2:16.45 in the event at the 2021 European Championships which gave her a 26th place finish. Løyning is currently qualified to race the 100 backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.
