Milwaukee Picks Up Dominant Sweep Over Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- The Milwaukee women’s swimming & diving team won all 13 swimming events on their way to a 198-68 victory over Stevens Point in its final dual meet of the season. Erika Thomas highlighted the effort by winning three times.

With the win, the Panthers will finish the season 4-1 in dual meets.

“Great way to end our dual meet season. Going into these late season meets on the road you never know how they are going to go,” said head coach Kyle Clements. “I was very happy to see that the overall result carried over from last weekend.”

Thomas picked up the first individual win of the night in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:54.52. She then earned a second one in the 200 individual medley when she touched the wall in 2:08.72. Thomas completed the hat-trick in the 500 freestyle after reaching the finish in 5:07.69.

Sweeping the backstroke events was Mara Freeman, starting by taking the 100 with a time of 58.26. In the 200, she outswam the competition to a time of 2:09.28.

In the 100 breaststroke, Gabrielle LePine continued her season-long stretch of winning every meet she’s competed in, this time posting a time of 1:02.97. She followed that up in the 200 breaststroke, winning again at 2:20.65.

Carly Plate took the crown in the 50 freestyle, managing to just edge out teammate Janelle Schulz (24.44) with a 24.33 finish. Schulz did manage to come out on top in the100 freestyle by posting a time of 53.85.

The top spot in the 200 butterfly belonged to Natalie DiProspero who turned in a time of 2:06.50. Maddi Hayashi rounded out the individual winners in the 100 butterfly with a 58.63 performance.

The meet opened and closed with relay wins for Milwaukee, starting with the 200 medley (1:46.17), and closing with the 400 freestyle (3:36.39).

“We have done nothing but pace and fine tune our championship events over the last month, and now it’s time to rest” finished Clements. “The next time we race these events they will be even better.”

The Panthers will be at the Wisconsin First Chance Meet Feb. 7-8 in Madison, Wis. The meet will be the final tune-up for the team before the Horizon League Championships Feb. 19-22.

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- The Milwaukee men’s swimming & diving team used a dominant performance to beat Stevens Point, 206-71, in its final dual meet of the season. Highlighting the night were two-win performances from both Gunnar Seversen and Alvin Valkki.

The Panthers had first-place finishes in 13 events, with nine different athletes picking up wins on the day, to finish the season 3-2 in dual meets.

Seversen got things started in the 200 freestyle winning the event with a time of 1:42.06. He followed that up in the 200 backstroke claiming a second top finish, touching the wall in 1:53.96.

Valkki was the other multi-event winner on the day, starting with finishing on top in the 100 breaststroke at 58.50. His second came in the 200 individual medley by finishing in 2:00.01.

The 100 backstroke was taken by Victor Kostov’s 53.34 performance. Trevor Nicodemus earned his first collegiate win in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:12.63 finish.

Moving to the freestyle events, Ben Lorenz used a time of 20.81 to move into the winner’s circle in the 50. Charlie House came away on top of the 100 (46.85), and Jay Jensen (4:36.08) took the crown in the 500.

Caleb Carlisle posted a time of 49.85 in the 100 butterfly to come away with another victory for the Panthers. Rounding out the individual winners on the day was Nik Wheeler with a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly, clocking in at 1:59.31.

Milwaukee bookended the meet with two relay wins, beginning with the 200 medley (1:34.35), and wrapping things up in the 400 freestyle (3:03.28).

STEVENS POINT, Wis.—The UW-Stevens Point diving team sealed all events in home dual against Milwaukee. The men finished with a score of 71 to Milwaukee’s 206. The women finished with a score of 68 to Milwaukee’s 198.

Results

The men were led by Declan Trant (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South). Trant took the one-meter and three-meter dives with scores of 373.60 and 358.40, respectively.

Camden Barwick (Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) posted a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.62.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Scott Jenn (Madison, Wis./Memorial)Jacob Biscan (Edina, Minn./Edina)Campbell Sullivan (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) and Barwick took second with a time of 1:37.35.

The women were led by Ryanne Strausbaugh (Muskego, Wis./Franklin). Strausbaugh finished first in the one-meter and three-meter dives with scores of 238.30 and 220.85, respectively.

The UWSP swimming and diving teams are back in the pool at home, tomorrow (Feb. 1) facing UW-La Crosse for Senior Day beginning at 1:00 p.m.
