Michael Phelps Cranks Out 7th-Fastest 200y IM of All Time in Exhibition Race

As an exhibition race within the 2015 American Short Course Championships currently taking place at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, the one and only Michael Phelps threw down a phenomenal 200y IM swim to signal his return to competition, unofficially that is.

The 22-time-Olympic medalist clocked an amazingly swift time of 1:40.84, which ranks the performance as the 7th-fastest 200y IM swim of all time.  However, with it being truly an exhibition swim while he’s under suspension, no record books will be updated with the result.

Phelps’ 1:40.58 from the Maryland Swimming Championships in Annapolis from 2010 is also on the all-time top performances list, which now has Stanford’s Dave Nolan at the top, after his American-record-setting performance of 1:40.07 from last night at the Pac-12 Championships.

Beijing phelps would be sub 1:38 of it was the only race he was doing.

“Phelps posted splits of 21.35 seconds in the butterfly, 24.92 in the backstroke, 29.61 in the breaststroke and 24.70 in the freestyle.”

Just think about what he could do in Beijing form. I’m thinking at least a 1:38.

Nolan’s record is under attack if Phelps races the 200yd IM when he has a little more training under his belt.

I doubt that is on his bucket list. I hope it’s not.

Alright Lochte, you’re next. Time to throw down a sub 1.40im!

IIf he can break 1.50 in SCM, then 1.39 should be no problem! Maybe he’ll finally bring his A-game to this year’s winter nationals.

Darn, forgot, every other year!

So we’ll never see him tapered in a yards meet again since the nationals SCY meet is always around the same time as the SCM Worlds. I suppose that Worlds is more important, but how cool would it be if a SCY meet like Nationals would be his “swan song.” What a great way to go out..his career started in SCY and why not end it in SCY!

Yes, some of us have rolled out of bed and gone a 1:40 point 200yd fly along in the pool and that’s not so impressive considering some conference meet swims were faster. Phelps has never focused on or swam with any peak emphasis short course yards. I take this as a bell ring swim that makes the statement he’s fit which is all we need to know 16 months out from the only meet that matters for him. If he showed up with burrito fueled love handles from playing X-Box on the couch I’d be concerned.

A better man needs a good woman. My sensibilities tell me future Mrs. Phelps is moreso the boot that lifts the fanny than… Read more »
