Kevin Cordes of the Fox Valley Swim Team became the 3rd-fastest American in history this morning in the 100m breast, clocking 59.05 at U.S. Olympic Trials prelims. That swim was a .65 second drop from his previous best, a 59.70.
Cordes is only .07 from the American record going into finals tonight, where he is the top seed. Second seed Cody Miller of Badger Swim Club became the 5th-fastest American in history with his performance this morning, a 59.33. Miller also swam a personal best, dropping .18 from his previous best, a 59.51.
The top five American performers in history are below:
- Eric Shanteau: 58.96 (2009)
- Mark Gangloff: 59.01 (2009)
- Kevin Cordes: 59.05 (2016)
- Brendan Hansen: 59.13 (2006)
- Cody Miller: 59.33 (2016
It’s worth noting that two of the other American swimmers in the top five swam their times during the 2009 supersuit era.
The duo now sit third and seventh in the world rankings.

Tonight, Cordes and Miller will take on Andrew Wilson of Longhorn, who went 59.76, and Michael Andrew of Indie Swimming, who became the youngest American breaststroker ever to go under 1:00 this morning with 59.96.
Did he train in Singapore all the way up until trials or did he go to the fox valley swim team? Or is he just qualified under that team?
FVST – he trained with Sergio Lopez until Trials, though I think they’ve been touring around different spots in the U.S. for at least a few weeks now. Sergio just doesn’t have a USA Swimming club team for him to represent, so he’s representing the club he swam with in high school.
He is definitely going to break that American Record.
How anyone could have possibly believed that he wouldn’t make the team astonishes me…
In this event, that is…
Great swim Mr Cordes!!!!!
