2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Complete Roster

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC ROSTER

USA Swimming’s first priority was first place finishers in individual events and top four finishers in the 100 and 200 free. The second priority was taking second place finishers in events that are not the 100 or 200 free. Then came those who finished fifth or sixth in the 100 and 200 free relays and did not fulfill the first two priorities (AKA winning an event or placing second).

*Wilimovsky will also be competing in the 10k Open Water Marathon swim event, but open water swimmers are not included on the roster, as FINA treats it as a separate sport.

Thanks for the list & picture. A couple questions -why are a number of the team members looking in different directions? And as for this page, as others have aptly pointed out before, surely you can find a better picture of Katie Ledecky, yes? Thank you.

In this kind of photo op, they usually have a large number of photographers, not just one of few in the middle.

Look, at a nationally televised Washington Press Corps dinner, Obama said to Trump, “Orange is not the new black.” It was universally applauded as a hilarious comment. The orange of Beisel’s tan is what GINA are laughing about. So I guess you can lump Obama in with us as racist in your mind.

lol I remember that. According to his former campaign manager, that night created Trump the candidate; he was so pissed at the disrespect he perceived at dinner, that he decided to run for prez, as a revenge so he could get his bully pulpit. So make fun of folks’ color at your own risk.

Why do they have to be pure bred asian to be called asian, but a little color, and they are called colored?

You should call people what they prefer to be called. Also, “colored” is an outdated term, just like we don’t rub around calling Semites. Try people of color. Also, we are not horses, so we are not “bred.”

Understand the humor, but they are simply Americans! I am sure both Nathan and Lia are very proud of their respective heritage, but they would tell you they are americans first!

I wasn’t questioning it’s legitimacy as an acceptable word in the US – Just surprised that it still was.

We have to use BAME in the UK – Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic groups. Coloured is quite frowned upon this side of the pond haha – Cultural differences.

NEVER EVER EVER say “colored.” Sooooo racist.

Yes, the NAACP stands for National Advancement of Colored People, but the organization was founded way back 1909 when that was the accepted term. The terms have changed, but the organization kept their acronym.

“People of color” (or “women of color,” as was used earlier in this thread) *is* acceptable. It may SEEM like the same thing, but it is NOT. When you call a person “colored” you are treating them like an object. When you refer to person as a “person of color,” you are simply being descriptive. Too, “people of color” encompasses ALL non-Caucasian races & ethnicities. Otherwise, you may use descriptors for individual ethnic groups: African-American, Asian, Latino, etc. … Read more »

And last but not least my opinion about the US medal potential plus my picks for winners at olympic games. Too lazy to think about other medals.

US medal potential. I don’t say it will happen. I say it can happen. We talk about the potential of medals.
MEN
50 free. 2 medals with Adrian and Ervin. Gold is possible
100 free. 1 medal with Adrian. Gold is possible.
200 free. 1 medal with Haas. Gold, silver or bronze. Honestly anything can happen. We don’t know his limits.
400 free. At best a bronze for Jeager.
1500 free. Silver or bronze for Jaeger
100 back. 2 medals with Murphy and Plummer. Gold is… Read more »

Dont feel he gets Gold with Plummer , Muprhy on fire and Larkin with so much talent & experience . But who knows , that race is pretty open between those 4 giants of backstroke .

No medal chance for the women in the 50 free or 100 back? Sounds like a harsh assessment, especially in the 100 back. Weitzel is 6th in the world (.11 out of 3rd) and Smoliga is 4th in the world (.08 out of third and .29 out of 1st) in those events right now.
Both are medal contenders.

Some of your other assessments are questionable, as well:
1) Bronze is possible for Cordes in the 100 breast? He’s ranked 2 in the world, sounds like at least silver is possible
2) 1 medal for the US in the men’s 100 fly? Both Phelps and Shields are ranked top 3 in the world, gold and silver are possible… Read more »

I like Weitzeil but there are jet planes ahead of her with the Australians, Ranomi, Sjöström or Halsall. She needs to go at least 0.3s faster.
I like Smoliga too but with the 2 Australians, Nielsen and Hosszu it looks very tough.
And if all stars are at their top:
– I don’t see Cordes beat CVDB for silver. Cordes is better in the 200 breast.
– Shields beat Le Clos or Cseh. Shields will be happy to make the final.
– Murphy beat Larkin. The Australian has a lethal finish.

But Justin Pollard, after reflection you’re right. In these cases I’ve confused medal potential and medal predictions.
I’m correcting.
Smoliga has a medal potential. Even if it’s unlikely to happen. But the potential is there.
Murphy has a gold medal potential in the 200 back. Even if it’s unlikely to happen.
Cordes can take the silver. Yes. But it’s unlikey to happen.
And Shields can grab a bronze. Yes. But he will need to make a Bradbury! 🙂 And it’s unlikely to happen.

This is the worst set of predictions I have ever seen. Not even that your picks are specifically bad, but just because they’re “what’s possible.”

It’s like you’re attempting to be bold and put yourself out there, but hedging like crazy because they’re not actual predictions.

Bobo, have you no love for Elizabeth Beisel anymore? She’ll be so upset! 😉

The woman was in the hospital for 3 days during her taper and had to deal for the first time with the pressure of being “expected” to win! I think she’ll be fighting for a medal with Maya in Rio!

As always you have pretty good predictions. I disagree with the following: 1) 100 back Murphy (sorry Lacourt will do no better than bronze) 2) 200 breast (Prenot gold) and 3) US will win the 400 free relay. Re the women: I am picking King for gold. Overall medal total will equal or better London with much younger team. People underestimate the US because they don’t understand how we have perfected the taper/re-taper and also the stress at US trials is GREATER than the Olympics.

I do agree with most of Bobos predictions, only Camille Lacourt will have a hard time to get gold I think, the US men and Larkin are looking very strong.

Then again, what a lineup of the US… even if some miss out at the OG, others will make it up… while most other countries better don’t miss their chances, because there is no one to make it up…

I expect some surprise from Chinese women though, it would be strange if they don’t win any title.

Closed Races will be 400, 800 free women, hard to bet against Ledecky and the 200 IM women: Hosszu is really hard to beat, but i don’t know why, I… Read more »

I think you are prejudiced in choosing Lacourt because of his nationality, just like many of us are prejudiced in picking US swimmers, but it would be nice to see what percentage of your gold medal picks win after Rio. I have a hard time believing the US men will only win 2 individual golds when there is at least 1 US man currently ranked in the top 3 internationally in every event except the 200 fly, but anything is possible…
