After putting up the fastest prelims swim in history in the 100 fly this morning, Florida sophomore Josh Liendo doubled down tonight, swimming a 43.07 to break the IUPUI Natatorium pool record he had set this morning. The performance earned Liendo his 2nd individual title of the meet, as he had won the 50 free last night as well.
With the 43.07, Liendo has now become the #2 performer of all-time in the event, jumping Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan. His swim tonight also goes down as the 2nd-fastest performance of all-time in the event, behind only former Gator Caeleb Dressel‘s NCAA Record of 42.80, which he swam at the 2018 NCAAs.
Top 5 Performances All-Time, Men’s SCY 100 Fly:
- 42.80 – Caeleb Dressel (2018 NCAAs)
- 43.07 – Josh Liendo (2024 NCAAs)*
- 43.15 – Youssef Ramadan (2023 NCAAs)
- 43.30 – Josh Liendo (2024 NCAAs)
- 43.40 – Josh Liendo (2023 NCAAs)
Liendo now holds 3 of the 5 fastest performances of all-time. He’s inching ever closer to Dressel’s legendary record and, frankly, he should have been a little closer to it than he was tonight. Liendo was noticeably long on his finish tonight, which may or may not have cost him the NCAA Record, but it surely cost him from going under 43 seconds. Either way, Liendo is only a sophomore, which means Dressel’s record is very much in jeopardy of be broken sometime during Liendo’s Florida career.
Liendo was out in 19.90 taking his 100 out tonight, which is actually faster than Dressel’s first 50 split from his record swim. Here is a split comparison between Liendo and Dressel:
Splits | Josh Liendo – 2024 NCAA Championships | Caeleb Dressel – 2018 NCAA Championships (NCAA Record) |
50 | 19.90 | 19.99 |
100 | 23.17 | 22.81 |
FINAL TIME | 43.07 | 42.80 |
